Chillicothe Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

June 20, 2015 - Tornado

This tornado moved from Monroe into Wapello county. This is the Wapello county portion. The circulation for this short-lived tornado originated on the northern flank of a small squall line bow segment. This circulation rapidly tightened south of Eddyville and broke off the line, where it became tornadic. Damage included multiple farmsteads that lost silos and outbuildings, bent power lines, snapped trees, and a house that lost its roof and east wall. Downburst damage also occurred upstream and downstream of the tornado track.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
