Clinton Power Outages Caused by Weather

March 31, 2023 - Tornado

A tornado touched down 3 miles north of Atalissa, Iowa in Cedar County, snapping power poles and large trees along its path. It caused significant damage to two homes southwest of Bennett, Iowa, and flipped over a semi along interstate 80. It also damaged several concrete block silos south of Bennett. The tornado continued to track to the northeast through a rural area, causing sporadic tree damage. The tornado entered extreme northwest Scott County about a third of a mile south of 220th St., then travelled around one mile before entering Clinton County about a half mile west of the intersection of 280th St. and 110th Ave. The tornado then dissipated about 2 miles south of Wheatland. The peak winds were estimated at 120 mph. The tornado was rated EF-2 in Cedar County, and EF-0 in Scott and Clinton Counties.

August 10, 2020 - Thunderstorm Wind

Widespread straight-line winds that produced extensive damage were reported throughout Clinton County, associated with a derecho. These winds lasted around an hour in total at any one location, even though the initial line of storms moved out quickly. Damaging straight-line winds continued and were associated with the rear inflow jet. Maximum wind speeds were estimated to be 80 to 100 MPH for much of the county with winds over 100 MPH in the city of Clinton. These estimates were determined based off damage reports and photos submitted through social media. The Clinton Airport AWOS reported a peak gust of 74 MPH with winds over 60 MPH for 45 minutes. In addition, a radio transmission tower collapsed at KMCN in Clinton with significant damage to the roof. The wind speed estimate with transmission tower collapse was 130 MPH. The duration of strong winds caused extensive damage to most trees, powerlines, crops, and structures in their path. The widespread damage also resulted in long duration power outages.

A NWS COOP observer reported 2.9 inches of snow in Camanche, Iowa. Significant blowing and drifting snow was widespread over the area with white out conditions at times lingering through the day of February 12. Power outages from down power lines, power poles, and tree branch damage were widespread.

April 20, 2023

A powerful storm system moved across eastern Iowa into southwest Wisconsin, sweeping a strong cold front through the area during the afternoon hours of Thursday, April 20th. A line of thunderstorms developed quickly along the front, with some of them becoming severe and producing hail in the counties along Mississippi River in eastern Iowa.

July 7, 2012

A cold front moving into eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois managed to develop isolated severe thunderstorms during the late afternoon and early evening of July 7, 2012. The airmass ahead of the front was very unstable but the shear was weak. The thunderstorms produced 60 mph winds at Bleidorn, Iowa in Clinton county. Another isolated severe thunderstorm near Sterling, Illinois in Whiteside county produced 60 mph winds. The public reported several large diameter tree limbs down along with power outages.

October 26, 2010

A large low pressure system moved into the region and continued to deepen as it moved across Minnesota, becoming the most intense storm on record in the|Midwest on October 26, 2010. A squall line formed in the highly sheared warm sector ahead of a strong cold front associated with the intense system. This line of storms swept rapidly eastward across extreme eastern Iowa into Illinois during the early morning hours. There were some reports of trees and power lines down from the thunderstorms, with a 65 mph wind gust measured in Clinton, Iowa at 435 am cst.

March 5, 2004

An intense storm system with an associated tropopause fold produced sustained gradient winds of 30 to 35 knots (35 to 40 mph) with gusts to 48 knots (55 mph) across Eastern Iowa, Northern Illinois, and Northeast Missouri. Measured gusts of 50 knots (58 mph) and 54 knots (62 mph) were reported at the Clinton, Iowa, and Peru, Illinois airports. Iowa DOT RWIS sites at De Witt, Iowa, and the junction of Interstate 80/280 reported sustained winds of 36 knots (41 mph) in a few 5 minute intervals during the daylight hours. A few trees were downed with known power outages affecting 15,000 people.

July 7, 2003

Another early morning MCS moved across Eastern Iowa and Northern Illinois producing heavy rain and damaging winds. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour were common with the storms. Heavy rain along the North Fork of the Maquoketa River in Iowa pushed the river to bankfull. The Clinton Airport AWOS measured 48 knots (55 mph) as the storms moved through downing some trees and power lines in Clinton.
