Power Outage in Creighton, NE

Widespread damaging winds were observed throughout the county. Winds were measured just outside the county of 73 mph. Within Knox County trees were powerlines were reported downed.

This EF3 tornado touched down approximately 2 miles southeast of Creighton. The tornado was initially weak with damage confined to softwood trees, irrigation systems, and siding and shingle damage. The tornado initially traveled north crossing highway 59 less than 1 mile to the east of the city of Creighton. The tornado made a direct impact to the Creighton Municipal Airport where 3 of the hangers received roof, garage and siding damage. There was also a storage building that lost a roof. The airport beacon was also lost during the tornado. Just to the south of the airport a building housing antique trackers was completely destroyed and was moved for 3 city blocks. The tornado then took a track to the northwest where a 10000 bushel grain bin was completely destroyed. There were also 5 other irrigation systems where destroyed as well as power poles snapped at their base. The tornado ended 1 mile north of Bazile Mills.

Freezing rain fell across the area for a while during the evening of March 9th followed by plunging temperatures and gusty North winds as an arctic air mass plunged into the region. Although most ice accumulations were under 1/4 inch, the combination of ice and wind gusts of 40 mph or more caused scattered power outages and closed a few schools and roads in the area.

Freezing rain accumulated between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch over much of the county. The icing downed tree limbs and caused scattered power outages.

Snow started falling over northern and western Knox county, mainly north through west of Center, Friday afternoon the 29th. Snowfall by mid Saturday morning had accumulated to a bit over 6 inches near Niobrara. Meanwhile, freezing rain developed east through south of Niobrara Friday night with snow mixing with or changing to freezing rain over most of the county Saturday. Some ice accumulations of between 1/4 inch and 1 inch occurred, mainly from around Crofton and Bloomfield toward Creighton then to Wausa. The icing caused tree and power pole damage and which downed power lines knocking out power to sections of the county, mainly the southeast half. Around 50 power poles were downed around Crofton. The storm caused around 1/2 million dollars worth of damage to utility companies.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at over 60 mph blew down large trees, downed power lines and did some building damage near Creighton. The strong winds lasted 15 to 30 minutes.
