Power Outage in Denton, TX

A trained spotter reported power poles down on Highway 380 just east of Lincoln Park, TX.

Extreme cold gripped the county for several days. Overnight lows were near or below 20 degrees Fahrenheit almost all week. The period of February 15-16th was the coldest with low temperatures between 5 to -7 degrees Fahrenheit, and the maximum temperature on the 15th was only in the lower teens. Wind chill values during the 14th-16th were between 0 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time. The cold temperatures resulted in an extreme amount of damage to pipes, infrastructure, and power.

A National Weather Service survey crew found evidence of an EF1 QLCS tornado in the city limits of The Colony. This tornado was brief, and damaged 6 homes and several power lines in the city.

An amateur radio report stated that damage occurred to the roof of a residential structure in The Colony, and that power lines were blown down.

This tornado formed from the same parent supercell which produced a tornado in Wise County. The tornado began in the far southwestern portion of Denton County, producing damage to open farm and ranch land. Once the storm moved into the Bolivar community, damage to several roofs on homes were noted, as well as substantial damage to barns. A metal storage tank was lifted and thrown into the base of a high tension power line, causing the steel beams to collapse.

Up to 3-4 of ice and sleet accumulated in Denton County. Most of the accumulations were due to sleet and the heaviest amounts were across the northern parts of the county. A trained spotter reported 2.5 of sleet with 0.3 of freezing rain to the NW of Sanger. The public reported 3.5 of sleet in Little Elm. Up to 4 of ice and sleet was reported on the streets in Lewisville. Numerous traffic accidents occurred on the icy streets and hundreds of tree branches broke due to the weight of the ice. Interstate 35 between Denton and Oklahoma was closed at one point due to the icy conditions and motorists were stranded in their vehicles along I-35E. On I-35E on the bridge over Lake Lewisville, a 21-year old female died during the early morning hours on the 7th when she lost control on the icy bridge and her car plunged over the guardrail into the lake below. Also at Lake Lewisville, a portion of the Pier 121 Marina collapsed on the 6th, damaging at roughly 50 boats. The popular TopGolf in The Colony sustained damage to several poles that hold the net up and remained closed for several days. Several power lines across the county also snapped due to the weight of the ice. As temperatures began to warm by the 8th and 9th, falling ice continued to be a hazard for several days and several more roof collapses were reported as the thaw continued. One large business sign in Sanger crashed into a parking lot on the 9th. In Lewisville, 2 people were injured when a carport collapsed on the 11th from the weight of the ice. The clean-up from the ice storm took several weeks.

Several trees and power poles were knocked down from high winds associated with thunderstorms in Frisco, just to the west of the Denton and Collin County line.

Texas New Mexico Power company reports a 55-foot utility pole was snapped south of Pilot Point.

A commercial building suffered roof damage and a residence in Denton lost part of its roof and had its windows blown in. About half a dozen trees were blown down. The North Texas State Fairgrounds north of Highway 380 sustained about $2,500 in damages when a portion of its roof was blown off. The roof subsequently knocked down power lines.

Winds were between 20 to 30 MPH sustained and gusted between 50 and 60 MPH for hours. A huge cloud of dust overspread the county, causing visibilities to fall dramatically. Hundreds of items including trees, power lines, signs, fences, and small outbuildings were blown down. A steel roof was peeled off of a business in downtown Lake Dallas, and many residences in the area also suffered roof damage. A construction trailer on Highway 377 was rolled over. In Little Elm, a utility pole fell on a car. At least one grass fire was started by a fallen power line.

Trees, power lines, and large limbs were blown down, and a trampoline was blown onto the top of a tree in the Bolivar area. Near Sanger, a boat storage building on FM 455 east had its roof peeled back, while power lines were blown down throughout the city. An estimated 60 MPH wind gust was reported about a half-mile west of Lake Ray Roberts Dam.

Gusty north winds behind a strong cold front blew several power lines down in the towns of Pilot Point and Aubrey in the northeastern part of the county.

A widespread swath of damage from straight line winds estimated at 80 mph occurred mainly across the western half of Denton. Approximately 20 wooden power poles were blown down, along with numerous trees and fences. One apartment complex had a section of the roof was blown off, with shingles blown off another apartment complex.

A dry line moved across north Texas as an upper level trough moved through the Desert Southwest. A line of thunderstorms developed and became severe as the night wore on. Two tornadoes and several downbursts caused significant damage across Grayson County. Strong winds followed behind a cold front and caused damage to power lines.
