Power Outage in Dyersburg, TN

Straight line wind knocked down two power poles on Highway 211 near Locust Grove Road. A spotter reported a measured wind gust of 66.9 mph.

A half inch of ice fell across Dyer County along with an inch of snow. Widespread power outages occurred. Roads were impassable.

High winds from Tropical Depression Ike affected Dyer County. The Dyersburg AWOS had sustained winds of 25 to 31 knots between 700 am LST and 900 am LST. The AWOS reported a peak wind gust of 45 knots. Numerous trees...power lines...and signs were knocked down across the county. Northern portions of the county was particularly hit hard. One house southwest of Finley sustained partial roof damage. A wildfire started from a power line that was knocked down from the winds. The fire quickly spread across North Dyersburg. No damage was reported from the fire.

A tornado briefly touched down along Chic Road, just west of the Moss Island State Wildlife Management Area. The tornado traveled northeast for roughly one mile, crossing the Great River Road before lifting. A mobile home was destroyed and several power lines were knocked down.

High winds blew an 18 wheeler over on Highway 51 outside of Newbern. Another 18-wheeler was blown off of Interstate 155 south of the Trimble exit. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down across the county.

The hardest hit area occurred in the Miltown and St. John Avenue area of Dyersburg. A tractor-trailor was also blown off U.S. Highway 412 north of the SR 104 exit by the straightline winds.

The tornado touched down just west of Dyersburg and moved east into the northwest part of the city. Three mobile homes were destroyed. The roof and facade of a manufacturing plant was damaged. Seven other businesses were damaged. Twenty signal lights were destroyed. Many trees, power lines and power poles were blown down.

Tropical Storm Ike moved across Northeast Arkansas into Southern Missouri. The storm weakened to a tropical depression as it moved. Tropical storm force winds occurred over Northwest Tennessee as a result. Substantial damage occurred from downed trees and power lines. Some structural damage occurred as well.
