A strong low pressure system moving across the region brought widespread rainfall along with snow to the northwest part of the region. Snow fell across much of north central South Dakota with heavy wet snow occurring west of the Missouri River across Corson and Dewey counties. Snowfall amounts ranged from 6 to 12 inches. Some snowfall amounts included, 6 inches at Timber Lake; 7 inches 10 miles southwest of McLaughlin; 8 inches 5 miles south of Morristown, and 14 miles northeast of Isabel with 12 inches 5 miles northwest of Firesteel. A band of heavy snow set up across Corson and Dewey counties during the early morning hours of April 2nd. Along with with heavy wet snow, northwest winds gusting up to 40 mph developed. By the time the snow ended in the late morning hours, 6 to 8 inches of snow had fallen. The heavy snow, combined with the strong winds, downed many power poles across the region along with making travel treacherous. Some snowfall amounts included; 4 inches at Eagle Butte; 6 inches at Timber Lake, McLaughlin, and 14 miles north of Isabel; 7 inches at Isabel and 6 miles southeast of McIntosh; 8 inches southwest of Keldron. More than 400 poles were lost to the heavy snow leaving approximately 800 people without power. Eighty lineman worked through the Easter weekend in the snow and mud. Large hail combined with strong winds caused quite a bit of crop and structure destruction from southwest Corson county across northern Dewey county. Crop losses were extensive in a wide band from north of Isabel to south of Timber Lake. Many vehicles, windows, siding, and roofs were damaged by the large hail. Many trees were stripped of their leaves with countless branches and trees downed. Some power lines and poles were also downed causing power outages. At a farm southwest of Timber Lake, half the roof was torn off of an 80 foot barn and two tractors were damaged. The hail piled up to 6 to 10 inches on Highway 20 west of Timber Lake. Due to the slippery conditions, some vehicles slid into the ditch. Snowplows were dispatched to clear the roads.
