Power Outage in Eureka, IL

Several tree limbs were blown down, one of which hit a power line and led to a power outage.

Numerous observers measured between 0.40 and 0.50 ice across Woodford County. The heavy ice accumulation snapped many tree branches, caused scattered power outages, and created slick and hazardous travel conditions.

Weather observers across Woodford County reported ice accumulations of 0.25 to 0.30. This amount of ice combined with winds gusting as high as 40 to 50 mph caused extensive damage to trees, power poles, and power lines. Several homes were damaged by falling trees and tree branches. About 20,000 people lost power for up to 4 days after the storm.

Weather observers across Woodford County measured 12 to 17 inches of snow. Thundersnow was reported from 1930 to 2030 LST on 2/1/11. 50 to 60 mph winds accompanied the snow, reducing the visibility to near zero. A peak wind gust of 64 mph was measured in Roanoke. As a result of the blizzard conditions, travel became nearly impossible across the area. In addition, power was lost at the Eureka water well, causing a loss of water services to the city for more than 24 hours.

Several weather observers reported around one quarter of an inch of ice across Woodford County. The thick ice, combined with gusty winds, caused damage to tree limbs and power lines. Power was out for about 12 hours for nearly 10,000 customers.

Lightning struck a tree near a house in Kappa, setting the power lines and part of the house on fire. The kitchen, a staircase and the room above the kitchen were damaged. A man, who was asleep when the fire started, escaped unharmed.

114 power poles (7 miles worth) were blown down near a substation near Roanoke. Other power poles were blown down near Eureka and minor structural damage occurred.

Several homes sustained major damage and several sheds were destroyed by the tornado. It also blew down numerous trees, tree limbs, power lines and power poles. As the tornado approached Roanoke, it weakened quite a bit with only minor tree damage reported through town before the tornado lifted and dissipated on the southeast side of town. No injuries were reported.

A tornado touched down on the southeast side of Germantown Hills (Woodford County), damaging a house. It pushed the front door open and blew the back wall of the house out about 15 inches. As it traveled to the southeast the tornado blew down numerous trees and power lines, before moving into Tazewell County. No injuries were reported.

As the tornado crossed from Tazewell County into Woodford County it increased in intensity. It destroyed several homes, outbuildings and businesses along US 24 before clipping the northwestern side of Eureka damaging several homes there. As it traveled to the northeast, additional homes sustained damage as well as trees, power lines, power poles, sheds and outbuildings. It moved through the extreme northern portions of Roanoke before lifting and dissipating one mile north of Roanoke. Several homes in this area sustained damage. Overall, 4 people sustained minor injuries.

A tornado touched down east of Eureka, paralleling the track of the earlier tornado in Woodford County. It blew down numerous trees and power lines. Also, it destroyed several barns and out buildings and caused minor damage to a couple of homes. No injuries were reported.

A swath of damage occurred over Woodford County extending from Bayview Garden to Minonk, a 27 mile long path. Numerous trees, power poles, and power lines were blown down. Several machine sheds were destroyed. Homes affected along the path sustained only minor shingle and siding damage.

Damage was reported countywide with numerous power poles, power lines, and trees blown down. Numerous sheds were destroyed. The most intense damage occurred from 4 miles east of Metamora through Roanoke and into the Benson area. Fifty-six power poles were snapped off near the intersection of IL Routes 116 and 117. In Roanoke, the roof of a business was blown off and it damaged 20 cars in the adjacent parking lot. In Benson, the legs of a grain elevator were damaged, several outbuildings destroyed, and a large tree fell onto a home causing moderate damage. Damage to the grain elevator was estimated around $300,000.
