Power Outage in Falls City, NE

A small tornado traveled approximately 2 miles toward the northeast, beginning just a few hundred yards south of the Nebraska Kansas border and continuing north into Richardson County. This tornado caused power line damage, roof damage to a shed, and door damage to another outbuilding. There was also evidence of swirl marks in the cornfields. A spotter did report a tornado near this location.

Several trees and power lines were blown down.

Rain changed to a wet heavy snow during the predawn hours of November 16th. Snowfall rates through mid morning reached an inch or two per hour as visibilities dropped to a quarter mile or less. Total snowfall was around 6 to 8 inches across most of the county, with 8 inches reported 5 miles northeast of Falls City among the highest reported in the county. The water equivalent of the snow in Falls City was around 2 inches and this slushy heavy wet snow caused a few accidents and power losses in the morning as the weight of the snow downed large tree limbs which fell on power lines causing them to fall. However, by afternoon the snow had mostly melted on roads.

This tornado started approximately 4 miles east of Falls City and traveled north northeast. Soon after the initial touchdown there was damage to the roof of a home and a church. The tornado then produced tree damage before blowing the roof off of a home and destroying several sheds and barns at another farmstead. Other tree, house, outbuilding and power pole damage was observed along its path before it crossed the Missouri River into Holt county Missouri. The damage path reached a half mile wide where high tension power poles were snapped northeast of Falls City.

Freezing rain accumulated between 1/2 and 1 inch across the county causing widespread moderate to major tree damage. Power lines and other damage was also noted with many power outages reported, some lasting a few days.

A period of strong winds damaged a barn and downed some power lines near Falls City. The winds also destroyed a barn and severly damaged 11 trees near Humboldt. The winds were in the wake of thunderstorms that had departed the area a bit earlier.

A line of thunderstorms produced damaging winds in Richardson County which blew down a tree and caused the power to be lost to all of the residents of Rulo.
