Episodes

September 12, 2021

A strong multicell moving west to east made landfall near Ludington around 3 PM EDT. This storm then tracked due east until it reached Mount Pleasant where it took a sharp turn toward the southeast. Shortly after, a large hail core materialized dropping hailstones that measured 2 inches in diameter (lime or hen egg sized) near Brant Township after 515 PM EDT and 1.75 inch (golf ball sized) hail closer to Chesaning. The last severe hail report (1 inch) with this storm occurred just before Montrose at 545 PM EDT. The storm weakened shortly afterwards near the Flint and Lapeer areas.||A trailing line of storms rolled ashore near Silver Lake around 615 PM EDT with an eastward trajectory. These storms produced mainly damaging wind gusts as they approached the M-54 corridor around 745 PM EDT. There were several reports of trees and power lines brought down as the storms tracked east along the I-69 corridor. Storms exited east into southern Ontario before 10 PM EDT.

October 23, 2020

A line of strong to severe storms tracked across Southeast Michigan on the afternoon of October 23, 2020 ahead of a strong cold front. The storms led to numerous reports of wind damage (trees downed and damage to outbuildings or roofs) and several instances of hail. Tens of thousands of customers lost power across the state due to the storms.

November 24, 2004

A potent storm system lifted out of the Southern Plains and moved through the Central and Eastern Great Lakes region on Thanksgiving Eve. This storm produced the first widespread snowfall of the season over southeast Michigan. Although this system had a lot of moisture to work with, temperatures were just marginally cold enough to produce snow. In fact, the precipitation did start out as rain before turning over to snow. Snowfall rates exceeded an inch per hour for a period, as thundersnow was reported. Due to the convective nature of the wet snow, snowfall accumulations varied significantly within and across the counties, generally ranging from 2 to 8 inches. Gusty northeast winds of 30 to 40 mph further aggravated the situation, causing scattered power outages, and reducing visibilities to a quarter of a mile or less at times. Hundreds of car accidents occurred, which left three people dead, and many more injured. Here are the highest snowfall reports received for each county:Poseyville (Midland county), 9.2 inches.Auburn (Bay county), 6.4 inches.7 miles west of Flint (Genesee county), 8.1 inches.Fairgrove (Tuscola county), 5.0 inches.Elba Township (Lapeer county), 5.7 inches.Howell (Livingston county), 5.5 inches.Saginaw (Saginaw county), 8.2 inches.Bennington (Shiawassee county), 6.5 inches.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
