Power Outage in Glenwood, IA

Public reported power lines down and power out in Glenwood.

Law enforcement indicated tree damage as well as power lines downed by the wind.

Blizzard conditions developed over Mills county early in the afternoon of Dec. 11. Snowfall over the county was generally 2 to 3 inches with around 2 inches reported in Glenwood the highest reported in the county. The snow combined with with northwest winds of 35 to 40 mph with gusts to around 50 mph causing visibilities to frequently drop below 1/4 mile and to near zero at times. A peak gust of 48 mph was measured by the Awos at Offutt AFB, just west of the county in Sarpy county Nebraska 548 pm. The strong winds caused numerous power outages in the county, especially from 5 to 6 pm. The snow began around 8 am and light snow or significant visibility restrictions in blowing snow lasted until around 2 am on the 12th.

A mix of freezing rain and sleet accumulated around 1/2 inch over most of the county. Although the mixture created hazardous driving conditions and stuck to vehicle windshields, accumulation on trees and power lines was somewhat limited.

Thunderstorm winds estimated at over 60 mph downed tree limbs and power lines in town. A window was blown out of the administrative office of the County Sheriff's Office and a 100 foot section of fencing along a ball field was ripped down.

Thunderstorm winds estimated at over 60 mph blew a semi truck off of Interstate 29 and knocked down tree limbs up to 6 inches in diameter which downed some power lines in town. The strong winds lasted for at least 15 minutes.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at 70 mph downed a number of trees and branches in Glenwood from around the center of town to the east side of town. Some windows were also blown out of buildings. Downed power lines caused about a third of the town to lose power temporarily.

Heavy rain producing thunderstorms tracked across southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa during the late evening Thursday (8/22) and Friday morning (8/23). For some areas it was the second night in a row of heavy rain. Flooding in western Mills county included the evacuation of residents near Keg Creek near Glenwood due to flood waters. New power poles were undermined due to severe flooding on 190th street near Pacific Jct. Rainfall in southwest Iowa included 3.14 inches in Glenwood and 2.29 inches at Hamburg.

Thunderstorms mostly south of the region caused wind gusts over 60 mph downing power lines around Glenwood and over much of Mills county.

A tornado touched down around 3 miles south southeast of Glenwood Iowa and tracked to just east of town before lifting. The tornado badly damaged a trailer home 1 mile east of Glenwood, and also blew some power poles onto a railroad track which were then run over by a train knocking power out to residents near Glenwood. A large Vinyl Fence was also destroyed, and part of a roof of another house was damaged.
