Power Outage in Goodlettsville, TN

A severe thunderstorm moving through Goodlettsville downed severe powerlines. Damages are estimated.

Several hours of severe non-thunderstorm winds led to numerous reports of damage across all of Davidson County. The highest wind gust measured in the county was at a mesonet station west of Berry Hill with 66 mph. Nashville International Airport measured a peak wind gust of 64 mph while a mesonet station at Vanderbilt University measured a peak gust of 58 mph. Due to the high winds, Nashville International Airport was forced to issue a ground stop through much of the afternoon for all arriving aircraft. Numerous reports from various sources were received for downed or uprooted trees, downed powerlines, roof and other property damage, and power outages. Some of the worst damage included an overturned and totaled private airplane at John Tune Airport. In Belle Meade, a large tree fell on top of a car along Woodmont Boulevard near Belle Meade. Hillwood High School near Belle Meade also received damage on its ballfield while a home in the area sustained damage after a tree fell on top of it. In Hermitage, a Walgreens building received roof damage, and the Embraer facility near Nashville International Airport also received roof damage. In south Nashville, a tree fell on top of a house along Hill Road. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in Davidson County. Nashville Electric Service reported that at its peak, 115,563 customers were without power due to 71 broken power poles. Damages are estimated.

Snowfall accumulations of 1 to 1.5 inches along with strong wind gusts and wind chills well below zero caused significant impacts in the Nashville metro area. Numerous traffic accidents were reported late on the 22nd as roads became treacherous with numerous lanes blocked, particularly along I-40. Thousands of power outages were also reported with 38,000 households without power just in Nashville during the beginning of the winter storm. Thousands of power outages continued well into December 24th as the Tennessee Valley Authority ordered rolling blackouts in order to handle the power demand during the extreme cold temperatures. Any potential injuries is not known.

Strong winds in the Old Hickory area downed a few trees and caused power outages.

This EF-2 tornado touched down near Highway 70 between White Bluff and Kingston Springs, blowing down a few trees and causing roof damage to a few homes in Dickson County. Moving into Cheatham County while staying north of Highway 70, there was severe roof damage to homes on Sneed Road and dozens of trees were snapped. Many more homes and a few businesses and churches suffered roof damage and dozens of trees were blown down further to the east along Highway 70, Butterworth Road, and Old Butterworth Road. Several outbuildings collapsed, more homes and churches were damaged, and power poles blown down further eastward along Highway 70 and Cedar Hill Road. The tornado continued northeastward across rural areas of southeastern Cheatham County, blowing down more trees and damaging roofs and outbuildings along Sams Creek Road, Indian Springs Road and Pond Creek Road before the tornado lifted just east of the Davidson County line. The track of this tornado was adjusted using high resolution NASA satellite imagery. Total path length of this tornado was 12.61 miles.

Trees were reported down on Lone Oak Road at Overhill Drive, Otter Creek Road at Granny White Pike, Bramble Wood Drive at Monterey Drive, 407 Lynnwood Blvd, 1718 25th Avenue N, and 3907 Trimble Road. Power lines were reported down on Highway 70 at I-40, Lynnwood Blvd at Abbott Martin Road, and Plymouth Avenue at Brush Hill Road.

More trees were blown down on the east side of Goodlettsville on Patton Branch Road and Madison Creek Road before the tornado lifted.

A 6 mile long by 1/2 mile wide microburst caused severe wind damage from the Napier area just southeast of downtown Nashville NNE across East Nashville and Inglewood. Numerous large trees were blown down, including several that fell onto and blocked I-40/I-24 near Fairfield Avenue. Other trees fell onto homes, including one house in the Napier area that completely collapsed from the weight of a fallen tree. Another historic home under renovation in East Nashville was blown down. Many warehouse buildings and other businesses also sustained significant roof and exterior damage, and several power poles and lines were also blown down. Winds were estimated up to 85 mph.

A wake low pressure area on the back side of the precipitation associated with the severe thunderstorms across southern Middle Tennessee caused strong to severe southeast winds of 40 to 60 mph across Davidson County. Numerous trees, power lines, and fences were blown down in Goodlettsville, Old Hickory, Hermitage, East Nashville, Green Hills, 12 South, and other areas of Nashville with numerous roads blocked. One tree limb fell through the roof of a home in East Nashville. Power was knocked out to around 15,000 customers. The Nashville International Airport ASOS measured a peak wind gust of 47 mph, along with a rapid sea level pressure fall of 9.4 mb between 9pm to 10pm CDT followed by a sharp sea level pressure rise of 3.4 mb from 10pm CDT to 11pm CDT.

A large tree was blown down onto power lines on 48th Avenue North at Wyoming Avenue in Nashville. The Nashville International Airport ASOS measured a peak wind gust of 33 knots (38 mph) at 455 AM CDT.

A 2.5 mile long by 0.3 mile wide microburst affected the Sunset View and Cumberland Trace neighborhoods along McGavock Pike and adjacent side streets. Scattered trees and power lines were blown down in this area towards the southeast.

A 1/2 mile long by 100 yard wide swath of wind damage struck the Percy Priest Woods subdivision along Bell Road, from Pleasant View Drive southeastward across Priest Woods Drive, Western Shore Drive, and across Bell Road onto Percy Priest Lake. Several trees were snapped and uprooted, a few power lines and poles were blown down, and minor roof damage occurred to a couple of homes. Although damage was too sparse to be conclusive, this may have been a brief EF0 tornado based on radar data.

Gusty south gradient winds blew down a tree which knocked down power lines in Bordeaux, as well as a tree that blocked Highway 100 at Highway 96 in far southwest Davidson County. A peak wind gust of 38 knots / 44 mph was measured at the Nashville International Airport ASOS at 419pm.

Two trees were blown down that knocked down power lines in Bellevue at 1245pm, and a large tree was blown down that crushed a fence in the Inglewood area of east Nashville at 615pm. Another large tree was blown down that knocked down power lines on David Drive in Donelson at 729pm. The ASOS at Nashville International Airport measured a peak wind gust of 48 mph at 1118am.

A trained spotter reported and sent a photo of a large tree and power lines down completely blocking the roadway at 2024 Old Baker Road.

An EF-1 tornado started along Stagner Road just north of Interstate 24 around 1.2 miles northwest of Joelton, blowing down several trees as it moved eastward to Whites Creek Pike. More trees and power lines were blown down on Millken Drive and Margie Drive before the tornado intensified and caused significant roof damage to two homes on Gary Road just south of Union Hill Road. Several power poles were also snapped and trees uprooted in this area. The tornado continued eastward through inaccessible forests blowing down numerous trees before rapidly dissipating about one half mile north of the Clay Lick Road bridge over Interstate 24. The beginning point, start time, end point, and path length of this tornado were updated in July 2018 based on newly available high resolution satellite imagery in Google Earth.

Gusty northeast winds up to 50 mph associated with Tropical Depression Harvey affected Davidson County during the evening on August 31. A peak wind gust of 47 mph was measured at the Nashville International Airport ASOS at 1020 PM CDT, and a peak wind gust of 45 mph was measured at John C. Tune Airport AWOS at 1035 PM CDT. Several trees and power lines were blown down across the county causing scattered power outages. A Facebook photo showed a tree fell onto a car on East Trinity Lane in Inglewood causing damage to the vehicle.

A large downburst associated with the rear flank downdraft of the Cool Springs and Four Corners Marina tornadoes caused damage across a wide swath of northeast Williamson, far southeast Davidson, and far northwest Rutherford Counties. In Williamson County, dozens of trees were snapped and uprooted from the Concord Pass area across Waller Road, Forest Trail, and Nolensville Pike, with minor roof and siding damage to numerous homes and a few trees falling on outbuildings and houses. One duplex on Nolensville Pike was heavily damaged by multiple trees falling onto it. ||In Davidson County, trees and power poles were blown down on Pettus Road, and several other trees were snapped and uprooted on Burkitt Road and near Cane Ridge Park. TDOT reported trees down at 13390 Old Hickory Blvd. Several tall power poles were blown down on Nashville Highway near Hickory Woods Drive, and scattered trees were snapped or uprooted in the Hickory Woods Estates and Peppertree Forest subdivisions. ||In Rutherford County, a large truck parked at 1325 Heil Quaker Road in La Vergne was blown over, injuring a man inside who was transported to the hospital. Scattered trees were snapped and uprooted across the Lake Forest subdivision, where one house was severely damaged by a fallen tree on Frontier Lane. Several more homes suffered roof and siding damage on Cedar Bend Lane, Angel Way Court, and Hollandale Road. Winds in this 12 mile long by 2 mile wide downburst were estimated around 80 mph.

Trees and power lines were blown down 1 mile north of Belle Meade.

Numerous tSpotter Twitter, media, and fire department reports indicated a roughly 2 mile wide downburst struck the Belle Meade, Charlotte Park and The Nations areas of west Nashville in a southeast to northwest direction. Several trees and tree branches were blown down, including a snapped pine tree at the Rock Harbor Condos on Basswood Avenue, a tree down on a house on Charlotte Pike, and a tree down on Brook Hollow Road. Many power lines were also blown down with widespread power outages. A large scaffolding structure for a water tower construction project on Morrow Road in The Nations collapsed. This was the second time the scaffolding collapsed due to severe thunderstorm winds, with the first time being on June 15, 2016. Pea size hail was also reported in the area. Winds were estimated around 60 mph.

A tSpotter report via Twitter indicated a tree was blown down onto a carport and blocked the driveway of a home in Inglewood around 316 AM CST. TV media also reported a few other trees and power lines blown down across Davidson County. A peak wind gust of 44 mph was measured at the Nashville International Airport ASOS at 437 AM CST.

Facebook reports indicated trees and power lines were blown down in the Woodland Pointe subdivision on Bell Road.

A CWSU employee and Twitter reports indicated high winds plus a lightning strike to the Nashville International Airport Terminal caused brief power outages at the airport, resulting in the diversion of several flight to other airports. The BNA ASOS at located at the airport measured a peak wind gust of 54 mph.

Snow and sleet accumulations up to 0.5 fell during the late afternoon on February 20, followed by freezing rain with ice accumulations around 0.25 from the evening on February 20 into the early morning hours on February 21. The ASOS at Nashville International Airport measured 0.12 of ice accumulation before precipitation changed to rain. A few trees and power lines were knocked down across the county.

Precipitation totals across Davidson County ranged from 1 of combined ice and sleet in southern portions of the county to 2 of combined ice, sleet, and snow in northern areas. A CoCoRaHS observer 2.8 miles NE of Brentwood measured 1.5 of combined ice and sleet, and another CoCoRaHS observer 4.2 miles N of Belle Meade measured 1 of combined ice and sleet. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down across the county, and many roads and schools were closed.

Davidson County Emergency Management estimated around 0.10 inches of ice accumulation across most of the county, with 0.25 to 0.50 inches of ice accumulation at elevations above 900 feet. Ice formed on several bridges and overpasses across the county, resulting in several vehicle accidents. Ice on the 3rd Avenue Bridge over Interstate 65 just north of downtown Nashville contributed to a one vehicle accident with one fatality. Several trees and power lines were also knocked down in areas above 900 feet across the county.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down across Davidson County, especially during the evening hours, with many blocked roads. The KBNA ASOS measured a peak wind gust of 52 mph around 830 PM CDT. One 9 year old boy was killed by electrocution around 930 PM CDT when he rode his bicycle over a live power line that had been knocked down by a fallen large tree limb. This death occurred in the 500 block of Charles E Davis Boulevard around 1.5 miles southeast of downtown Nashville. Trees were reportedly blown down in Old Hickory, a large tree limb was blown down on power lines in the Charlotte Park area of west Nashville, and a large tree limb was blown down in Sevier Park. Trees were blown down and blocked roads such as Robertson Avenue in west Nashville, Towry Street at Paragon Mills Road in Antioch, and Carter Avenue in east Nashville. Two houses were set on fire in Oak Hill at Rochelle Drive and Overton Drive due to downed power lines. A few windows were broken out of the Omni Hotel in downtown Nashville.

A swath of thunderstorm wind damage, with a path length of just over one mile, and a width of about 500 yards, occurred in Lakewood. At least 100 large hardwood trees were uprooted with a few trees snapped, fallen trees damaged some roofs and vehicles, and some loss of shingles noted on dozens of house roofs. Three power poles were snapped and wood fences in the area were also blown down.

A swath of thunderstorm wind damage, with a path length of just over one mile, and a width of about 500 yards, occurred in Lakewood. At least 100 large hardwood trees were uprooted with a few trees snapped, fallen trees damaged some roofs and vehicles, and some loss of shingles noted on dozens of house roofs. Three power poles were snapped and wood fences in the area were also blown down.

Multiple power lines down along Lebanon Road due to debris falling on them. Type of debris was unknown. This resulted in power outages to neighborhoods in this area.

A large tree fell on a house. Numerous tree limbs covered roads in Old Hickory. 5000 people were without power at one point. Some employees worked 16 hour shifts to restore power in a neighborhood near the Du Pont plant.

Spotter reported golf ball size hail. Newspaper story stated that 5,500 people were without electric power in the Nashville area because of the thunderstorm.

Numerous trees and power lines were down around the county. Winds gusted to 64 mph on the wind equipment located about 23 feet above the ground at the EOC. 6000 people were without power at one time.

The four-story 120-year-old building was located at Eighth Avenue South. The historic building had to be torn down. The huge building started as the home of Liberty Mills in 1883. Wheat was ground into flour in the old building. The building and the land it was on was worth $493,200.
