Power Outage in Granite City, IL

Damaging thunderstorm winds moved through Bethalto and Hamel. In Bethalto, several power poles were snapped along Roosevelt Drive. Also, about 3 miles east northeast of Bethalto a grain silo was damaged and an outbuilding collapsed. Also, numerous tree limbs, power lines as well as several large trees were blown down.

Thunderstorm winds blew down several trees near the intersection of 4th Street and Henry Street. Also a large tree was blown over into the front yard, narrowly missing the house. Numerous tree limbs and power lines were blown down around town, including in Oakwood Cemetery.

Thunderstorm winds caused widespread damage between Granite City, Pontoon Beach, Glen Carbon and Troy. Numerous tree limbs were blown down as well as power lines. Also, several large trees were blown down. In Glen Carbon, some of the fallen trees blocked roads in the Oakdale Lake Drive area. Just east southeast of Troy a large tree fell onto a driveway.

Widespread wind damage between Alton and Edwardsville. In Alton, the soffit on a house was partially torn off. Numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down in Alton, Bethalto, Wood River, Glen Carbon and Edwardsville.

The tornado began on the south side of I-270 around three-quarters of a mile west of the I-270/I-255 interchange at 8:27 PM CST. Damage in this area consisted of several downed highway signs and a bent light pole. The tornado moved northeast and intensified rapidly after crossing I-255, striking an Amazon warehouse. The west-facing walls of the warehouse collapsed inward, which was followed by multiple structural failures as the tornado moved through the complex, including the collapse of additional walls and the loss of a large segment of the roof. This was the worst damage along the entire tornado track rated EF-3. Cars in the rear of the building were strewn eastward and power lines and several large high tension towers were also destroyed. There was one person injured and 6 fatalities at the Amazon facility. The tornado weakened as it moved northeast across Sand Road, where it destroyed an unanchored mobile home and an outbuilding, snapped trees, and downed power poles. Damage in this area was rated EF-1. Further northeast, the tornado crossed South University Drive where it snapped a power pole and downed additional trees. It then crossed into the Sunset Hills Country Club subdivision. Throughout a portion of the subdivision, there were downed trees, snapped branches, and superficial home damage consisting of missing shingles or small portions of roof covering. The tornado weakened further as it moved northeast, and lifted just west of Butler Boulevard at 8:35 PM CST. Noteworthy is debris from the Amazon warehouse was found along the entire track of this storm, tens of miles to the northeast of the warehouse. Overall, the tornado was rated EF3 with a path length of 4.22 miles and max path width of 300 yards. Six deaths and one injured were reported.

Thunderstorm winds caused a delivery truck to be blown into a car on the other side of the road causing a collision. The delivery truck driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Also, several large trees, tree branches and power lines were blown down.

Intermittent, low end tornado damage was found on a path from just north of Saint Jacob, IL eastward into the Highland, IL area. The tornado first touched down north of Saint Jacob, IL along Marine Road where it toppled several trees and partially tore the roof off a large metal shed. The tornado then likely lifted briefly, but then touched down again intermittently along Lake Road. The tornado did minor roof and siding damage to many homes along Lake Road, as well as topple several trees and snapped a power line. The worst of the damage, which was rated EF-1, was to a large metal shed that was destroyed and the roof was lofted into nearby trees and pushed hundreds of feet down the street. In addition, a 2x4 from this roof was driven straight into the roof of a nearby building. The tornado then likely lifted briefly, before touching down again and doing additional damage to large trees in a neighborhood along 15th and 16th Streets. The tornado then lifted and dissipated. Overall the tornado was rated EF1 with a path length of 5.29 miles and a max path width of 700 yards. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Another enhanced area of wind damage occurred along and south of Interstate 70 in Madison County. Numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines were blown down in Granite City, Mitchell, Edwardsville, Maryville, Collinsville, Troy, St. Jacob, and Highland. Two houses in Highland sustained minor guttering and siding damage.

The tornado crossed the Mississippi River from St. Louis County Missouri into Madison County Illinois, about 1.1 miles northwest of the intersection of Illinois Routes 3 and 203. It blew down several trees once it made landfall. As it traveled to the east northeast, it took about a quarter of the roof off of a business on the northwest corner of the intersection of Illinois Route 3 and Piasa Lane. On the east side of Illinois Route 3, a gas station sustained minor damage. Damage in this area was rated EF1. Further northeast, several power poles were snapped along S. Delmar Avenue. Just south of the intersection of Robbins Road and Illinois Route 111, 5 large wooden power poles were snapped and there was a convergent pattern in the tree damage to the north. As it crossed the far southern portions of South Roxana, there was minor damage to several homes, then the tornado crossed Highway 255. It buckled in a wall on a large steel framework building and twisted the roof steel girders just south of Old Alton Edwardsville Road, about a quarter of a mile east of the intersection of Old Alton Edwardsville Road and Section Line Road. On the same property, another very large and well-built wood framed metal sided storage building was completely destroyed by the tornado. Damage was rated EF3 in this location. The tornado continued to the northeast crossing Illinois Route 143 just north of the intersection with N. University Dr. Before lifting and dissipating, the tornado crossed Illinois Route 159, just south of Fox Creek Golf Club and snapped off several large fir trees as well as a wooden power pole. The tornado path length in Madison County was 8.6 miles with a max path width of 150 yards. The damage in this segment was rated EF3 with max wind speeds of 160 MPH. Overall, the entire tornado path length was 10.6 miles with a max path width of 150 yards. The tornado was rated EF3 with max wind speeds of 160 MPH.

Thunderstorm winds blew down several very large trees around the 1000 block of both Grand Avenue and Randle Street near North Elm Street. One of the trees went through the roof of a house on Grand Avenue causing major damage. Another large tree on Randle Street pulled down several power lines.

The 86 mph wind gust caused some damage to the St. Louis Regional Airport's administration building. The winds partially caved in the building's 80 foot long, 25 foot high door. It will cost about $15,000 to repair the door, if that is possible, and between $100,000 and $125,000 to replace, if necessary. In Wood River, numerous trees, power poles and power lines were blown down. A few of the trees landed on the roofs of houses. Some of the houses sustained minor to moderate roof damage because of this. Also, a dugout on the softball field at East Alton-Wood River High School had its roof blown off. No injuries were reported.

The tornado first touched down 3 miles southwest of Highland in Madison County, just to the east of Bluemound Road around 855 pm. It quickly moved east snapping and uprooting trees. Just before reaching Illinois Route 160, it destroyed a large metal farm building and carried the metal panels about a mile downwind. On Old Trenton Road, it snapped three wooden power poles and snapped trees and caused minor damage to a barn roof on a farmstead. As it continued to move east it widened to 700 yards as it passed south of Highland. It caused significant damage to trees, power poles and farm outbuildings in addition to minor roof damage. Near the intersection of St. Rose Road and Iberg Road, extensive tree damage occurred with one tree falling on a home and a second falling on a prefabricated carport. The tornado continued to move east causing varying degrees of damage to five homes in a subdivision just north of St. Rose Road. The tornado then moved across Waage Road blowing out multiple windows of a farm house and destroying a large metal shed. The tornado then crossed Baumann Road into Clinton County. The maximum intensity for this segment was rated EF2 and was on the ground for 6.5 miles before crossing into Clinton County. The maximum width of damage was 700 yards. As for the entire tornado, it was rated EF2, with maximum wind speeds of 130 mph. The maximum width of the tornado was 700 yards and the total length of the tornado was 18.2 miles.

It was determined that a tornado touched down on Weathervane Road on the west side of Troy at approximately 11:45 PM. It was there that the tornado was at its strongest, an EF2, as it completely removed the roof from a well constructed home. One occupant received a serious head laceration and was treated at a local hospital. The tornado moved eastward at 60 mph, with a damage swath of 100 to 200 yards wide. Numerous trees, power lines, and roofs sustained minor to moderate damage along its path. The tornado continued to near the intersection of North Dewey Street and East Market Street, where it lifted at approximately 11:48 PM. The path length was 2.7 miles long.

The tornado formed just west of Interstate 55 near Mick Road approximately 2 miles north of the Interstate 55/70/255 interchange where a few power poles were knocked over. The tornado crossed Interstate 55 and produced minor tree damage. It continued east-northeast where it produced roof and siding damage to a couple of homes. One home had part of the roof decking on the south side of the house removed while another had a flag pole located well to the north of the structure bent over almost to ground level. This pole was pointing south. Further along the path, a barn was destroyed along Staunton Road with debris strewn several hundred yards across the road into an open field. The tornado continued east-northeast until it snapped several mature pine trees off several feet above the ground along Nealy Lane. The tornado dissipated before reaching Illinois Route 4. The path length was 2 miles. The tornado had a maximum width of 50 yards and maximum intensity of EF1 for the destroyed barn and the snapped pine trees.

Thunderstorm winds blew down a large tree near Illinois Route 157, just north of West Main Street, as well as power lines throughout town.

Thunderstorm winds blew down several large trees in town. One large tree fell onto a garage destroying it. A couple other trees fell onto power lines, pulling them down as well. Also, several tents were blown over at the 13th Annual Route 66 Festival. No injuries were reported.

Strong winds associated with the remnants of Hurricane Ike blew over numerous trees, tree limbs and power lines throughout the county. Two miles southeast of Pontoon Beach, a tree was blown over onto Illinois Route 162, west of I-255. Some corn crops were blown over in the Highland area.

Local law enforcement reported numerous trees and power lines down across town. Several homes also sustained roof damage. Nine railroad cars were also blown over by the wind.

Thunderstorms winds downed trees and power lines across eastern and central Madison County. Power lines were reported down along Highway 203 in Madison and also in Godfrey. Corn in several fields near Troy were flattened by the wind.

Thunderstorm wind gusts caused damage at a marina along the Mississippi River in Alton. Several docks were damaged with the debris damaging several boats. Damage was estimated at $1 million. Trees and power lines were reported down in Roxana and Wood River. The local electric utility reported that up to 1200 customers lost power. At the ConocoPhilips oil refinery in Wood River, the power outage caused some spectacular flames to erupt from the burn towers. A company spokesperson said that was a normal procedure during a power outage because excess hydrocarbon products in the plant's processing units must be burned off to prevent explosions.

Thunderstorm wind gusts caused scattered damage across the area. Near Collinsville, 2 large trees were downed blocking a street. In Highland, trees and power lines were downed, including a historic hackberry tree in the downtown square. Two cars were also damaged by a business sign that was blown down. Southwest of St. Jacob, a couple of 50 foot tall trees were blown down at a farm.

The Sheriff Department reported trees and power lines down in Godfrey. One tree fell on a house knocking a hole in the roof. In Alton, a 12 inch diameter tree limb took down power lines at State and 9th Streets knocking out power.

Law enforcement reported a few trees and power lines down in Pontoon Beach. A storm spotter reported a tree down in New Douglas.

The County Sheriff office reported trees and power lines down in Glen Carbon and Granite City. One home in Glen Carbon was damaged by a fallen tree.

Thunderstorm wind gusts downed some trees and power lines in the Maryville and Troy areas. Illinois Power reported power was out to at least 200 customers. A number of crops were damaged with corn stalks being flattened to the ground.

A severe thunderstorm produced wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph causing damage across north Madison County. In Godfrey, some large trees on the Lewis and Clark College campus were downed. There was also some minor roof damage at a shopping center across the street. Trees and power lines were down in Dorsey, Prairietown, Worden and Livingston., with some roads blocked by the downed trees. A few homes suffered minor damage from downed trees as well. A tractor-trailer was blown over on Interstate 55 near Livingston.

Thunderstorm wind gusts downed numerous trees and power lines in Edwardsville. Several automobiles were damaged by falling trees. Weather spotters estimated 70 mph wind gusts near Troy.

Fire Department personnel reported trees and power lines down. One tree fell onto and damaged a home. Trees were also reported down on Highway 111.

Thunderstorm wind gusts blew over several rail cars near the Madison/Macoupin County line just northwest of Livingston. 12 cars were derailed in 3 different areas. Two tractor trailer trucks were blown over on I-55 near Livingston. There were also trees and power lines down in the area.

The County Sheriff reported trees and power lines down in the Godfrey and Madison areas.

A line of severe storms swept across Madison County downing numerous trees and power lines. Illinois Power reported that 52,000 customers lost power in the Metro East during the peak of the storms. There was minor structural damage, such as some roof shingles blown off, storage buildings damaged, and signs blown down.

Thunderstorm wind gusts downed numerous trees and power lines. A major transmission line between Madison and Venice was knocked down taking out power to both communities.

The City Police reported several large trees and power lines down. Storm spotters also reported 1 inch hail.

Law enforcement officials reported power lines down in Wood River and Hartford. An amateur radio spotter reported wind gusts of 65 mph on his wind equipment.
