Episodes

June 17, 2010

A powerful mid summer storm system over the western Dakotas, combined with warm moist air surging northward from the Gulf of Mexico was responsible for the widespread severe weather outbreak across the Upper Midwest.

February 3, 2007

Brutally cold temperatures combined with winds in the 10 to 20 mph range to create dangerous wind chills across portions of northwest Wisconsin in early February. Wind chills below -40 were common February 3rd through the 5th. The cold wave closed schools, suspended some outdoor activities, and burst pipes because of the lack of snow cover. Power companies urged their customers to conserve energy during this cold wave, as the region's electrical grid became stressed. It was the longest period of cold since 1996. Lows in the -20s were common across northwest Wisconsin during this first weekend in February into Monday morning.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
