Hagerstown Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Spotters reported significant ice accretion of resulting in numerous accidents, downed trees and power lines, and isolated power outages throughout the county.
Tree damage was reported west of Fairplay, including a tree that blew down onto power lines in the 7500 block of Dam Number Four Road.
Numerous trees were blown into power lines along Battletown Road and Strite Road.
Power lines were blown down on the 1000 block of Georgia Avenue.
Power poles were blown down along Western Pike.
Episodes
Unseasonably warm high pressure build over the Mid Atlantic ahead of a strong cold front. Scattered thunderstorms developed across western Maryland during the afternoon of September 26th in this warm and unstable air mass. A storm in Washington County produced damaging winds that downed trees and power lines. Lightning was also responsible for an office building fire.
A strong cold front brought very strong and gusty winds to the Mid-Atlantic on February 17. Scattered reports of downed trees and powerlines occurred across the region.
Very strong winds accompanied a cold front that crossed the region on the first of December. The strong winds produced damage in parts western Maryland. Numerous trees and power lines were downed. Some damage to structures was reported and there were many power outages. Winds gusted to 58 mph at Frostburg MD.
A strong cold front which crossed the region late on the 9th was accompanied by gusty northwest winds up to 57 MPH. Some locations reported downed trees and power lines in addition to minor structural damage due to the high wind. In Allegany County, a number of trees were downed, awnings were damaged, and signs were broken in Cumberland. In Frostburg, a tree was downed onto Chestnut Street and a stop sign was blown off a pole. In LaVale, a tree fell onto a parked car and another fell onto the roof of a home on Buchanan Avenue. In Washington County, a 52 MPH gust was recorded in Hagerstown and a 57 MPH gust was measured in Smithsburg.
