Power Outage in Hilo, HI

As a front moved through the isles, high pressure in its wake brought blustery winds that resulted in power outages in many areas, downed trees and power lines, and roof damage to many residences. There also was heavy rainfall in some locales, the most significant was flash flooding on the Big Island that claimed a woman's life as she tried to cross fast-moving water in the area. No other deaths or serious injuries were reported. The cost of damages was not available.

A swell from Tropical Cyclone Madeline generated surf of 8 to 25 feet along the east-facing shores of the Big Island of Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai, with the highest surf over eastern parts of the island chain. The system also produced gusty winds and heavy showers over parts of the Big Island. Power outages and minor flooding were the result. No significant property damage or injuries were reported, however. This episode is continued from the end of August.

Windy conditions, heavy showers, and high surf from a trade wind swell were all part of the panoply of weather that affected the Hawaiian Islands in the middle of March. The strong winds toppled trees and power lines, and blew the roofs off several homes throughout the state. Heavy rain caused ponding and isolated debris flows on roadways, and small stream and drainage ditch flooding. The trade wind swell produced surf of 8 to 12 feet along the east-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii. No serious injuries were reported. The costs of damages across the island chain were not available.

A cold front moved rapidly through the Aloha State. There were only limited areas of heavy rain as the system moved from west to east across the island chain, though a flash flood did occur in East Maui. Also, a male tourist was struck by a falling branch at a golf course on Oahu and died from his injuries.||Power poles and lines, and trees, were downed in several areas as the front pushed through the state; a metal roof was blown off a home in Kunia Camp on Oahu; and three boats ran aground, and a boat lost its moorings, near Hilo on the Big Island. Very strong winds also occurred over the Big Island summits.

A powerful winter storm brought heavy rains, thunderstorms, high winds, and blizzard conditions to Hawaii in the early part of December. A strong low pressure system northwest of Kauai, along with a cold front moving through the islands, caused significant damage across the state. One fatality can be attributed to the storm, and two known injuries. Trees were toppled, along with power poles and lines. Flash flooding damaged homes, and the inclement weather snarled traffic. The state estimates total damages to be about $5 million.

Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms produced small stream and drainage ditch flooding, and ponding of roadways over northern and eastern parts of the Big Island of Hawaii. Also, a lightning strike in the Puna District cut power to most of the isle from 0830 to 0900 on the 7th. No serious property damage or injuries were reported.

Intermittent heavy rain, showers, and isolated thunderstorms produced small stream and drainage ditch flooding, and ponding of roadways on the Big Island of Hawaii. Isolated power outages also occurred across the isle. No serious injuries or property damage were reported.

Rain bands associated with Tropical Storm Jimena, which was passing more than 100 miles south, moved over coastal and upslope sections of the Hamakua, Hilo, Puna, and Kau districts on the Big Island of Hawaii, from near Hopokaa all the way southward to near Ka Lae (South Point). The heavy rain and showers caused stream and drainage ditch flooding, and ponding of roadways in populated areas over the eastern half of the isle. The rain and occasional easterly wind gusts of 35 to 40 mph caused isolated power outages as well. However, no serious injuries or property damage were reported.

Flooding from heavy showers and thunderstorms closed a number of streets in northern and eastern parts of the Big Island of Hawaii. The most serious flooding occurred in the Hamakua District in Ahualoa, where up to six feet of water raged in a torrent across Puaaona and Kapuna roads. Many residents were stranded for several hours because streets were impassable. Rainfall also caused a landslide that closed one lane of the Hawaii Belt Road at Laupahoehoe Gulch for a time. In Kailua-Kona, trees fell on to power lines. No serious injuries were reported, however.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms produced stream and drainage ditch flooding and ponding of roadways in the Hilo districts of the Big Island of Hawaii. In a few areas, trees were knocked on to power lines, causing power outages. There were no reports of serious injuries or property damage.

Lightning struck in various locations on the Big Island of Hawaii, especially in the Puna and North and South Kona districts. Power lines were hit and several trees were downed, causing more electrical outages. More than 25,000 residents of the isle were without power for at least a part of the day. There were no reports of serious injuries, however.
