Power Outage in Huron, SD

Numerous pine trees were uprooted by thunderstorm winds. Power was knocked out across the southern portions of Huron.

Ping-pong ball sized hail dropped just west of Bonilla and U.S. Highway 281. Power was knocked out in town.

A power pole was snapped off by thunderstorm winds. Property damage cost is a rough estimate.

Several limbs down throughout Huron, along with power lines. Several uprooted trees. Numerous tents and awnings at a soccer tournament were destroyed.

Blizzard conditions led to a shutdown of government offices and schools, and travel was not recommended due to the widespread whiteout conditions. Almost unprecedented amounts of storm-total snowfall occurred, with amounts of 18.0 inches at Huron, 25.0 inches 2 miles southeast of Wessington (second greatest 3-day snowfall total on record) and 29.8 inches near Hitchcock. With winds gusting up to 51 mph at Huron, many areas had snow drifts of 5 to 10 feet, making roads impassable. Spotty power outages occurred.

High winds from a westerly direction followed a low pressure system which had brought Christmas Day rain and thunderstorms. There were several reports of power lines and branches down and resulting power outages. The winds included measured sustained winds of 40 mph and a peak gust of 53 mph at Huron, but stronger winds and gusts were suspected to have occurred.

Westerly winds behind a cold front reach sustained speed of 40 to 45 mph for a few hours. A gust to 60 mph was measured at Huron Airport. The high winds caused spotty power line and traffic light damage.

A tornado damaged homes, mainly roofs and siding. The tornado also damaged a garage, destroyed a partially anchored storage shed, blew down power poles and lines, tossed a 5th wheel camper 75 yards, and damaged crops.

Thunderstorm winds blew down seven power poles onto a road, and caused tree damage.

Thunderstorm winds peeled off an apartment roof, damaging contents inside with water and wind, and displacing the residents of ten units. The winds also caused extensive tree and power line damage, some roof damage, and blew over two nearby semi trucks. Signs were also blown over.

Strong north winds affected the area during the late afternoon and early evening. A large outbuilding was destroyed near the western edge of Hitchcock, and a power pole in standing water was snapped off 4 1/2 miles east of Hitchcock.

Snow, beginning briefly as rain, fell from around noon on April 10th to the start of the evening of April 11th. The snow accumulated 4 to 8 inches and was accompanied by north winds averaging around 30 mph and gusting to 45 mph. This produced blizzard conditions for much of the time, with zero visibilities and drifting snow making travel impossible. Schools and numerous businesses were forced to close. Power outages were reported as some power lines were downed by the combination of wet snow and strong winds.

A tornado severely damaged 3 houses and destroyed or damaged a barn and several smaller buildings on farmsteads. The tornado knocked down power poles, with a transformer on one of the poles starting a brief fire. A tree shelter belt and crops were damaged. The amount of crop damage was not known.

Thunderstorm winds blew down numerous power lines, several poles, and caused widespread tree damage. Several roads were blocked by large limbs and other debris. The winds also blew the roof off a mobile home, destroyed a small storage building, and damaged other small structures. Numerous vehicles and some homes were damaged by tree debris.

Thunderstorm winds destroyed a car wash, blew the roof off a recreation center and bowling alley with resulting damage to the inside, and damaged an apartment building and former restaurant. The winds also caused tree damage, including large trees blown down, and blew down power poles and lines.

Thunderstorm winds in a wet microburst blew around and damaged at least three airplanes. The winds also destroyed several farm buildings, with debris blown a half mile. One farm home was damaged with windows broken and minor roof damage. Trees and power lines were down near the airport.

Thunderstorms produced four known tornadoes and several reports of large hail in southeast South Dakota during the evening of July 23rd. The tornadoes caused damage to homes, power poles, and crops.
