Power Outage in Independence, IA

The Emergency Manager reported trees and powerlines down across the county.The winds lasted for several minutes. .

Reports of the electrical power out in the neighborhood.

A trained spotter reported numerous trees down and no power in Independence.

A COOP observer reported 70 mph winds that blew down trees and power lines. Corn was also flattened from Independence to Hazelton. A semi-truck jackknifed on Highway 151 north of Independence.

The emergency manager reported a downburst with winds more than 70 mph struck Independence. The northwest side of town sustained the most damage with trees down, power poles snapped and signs blown down.

Law enforcement reported several large tree branches and power line down in Independence.

The emergency manager reported numerous trees and tree limbs down in Quasqueton, Independence and Rowley. The power was out in Rowley. In Independence, seven 40 to 70 foot tall trees were blown down, one fell on a house. There were twenty limbs 30 to 40 feet long down and numerous branches 10 to 30 feet long down. Winds were estimated over 70 mph.

Law enforcement reported several trees and power lines down in the city of Independence.

Wind gusts estimated to be 70 mph snapped a power pole at the intersection of V71 and D22 about 3 miles east of Jesup, IA around 800 pm CDT July 22.

Wind gusts estimated to be 75 mph blew a tree down across some power lines about 4 miles north of Troy Mills on Highway W45 around 755 am June 19. The tree caught on fire.

Wind gusts estimated to be around 80 mph caused widespread tree damage with tree limbs over 8 inches in diameter and trees over 3 feet in diameter blown down along a path from 2 miles south of Quasqueton, IA in Buchanan County, to Walker, IA in Linn County, along Highway W35 and Highway W6E to Center Point, IA in Linn County between 745 am and 830 am June 19. Some houses and many out buildings were damaged by falling trees. Power lines were also knocked down across much of the area. The end time of the damage was around 830 am.

Winds estimated to be 60 mph ripped much of the roof off of the grandstand at the Independence Motor Speedway during the late morning hours of April 10th. Part of the roof then cut nearby power lines. Also, wind downed a two foot diameter tree across Highway 150 on the south side of Independence.

A series of upper level disturbances caused isolated thunderstorms to develop with each passing wave on July 13-14, 2012. A trained spotter reported one tree down along with a power pole down near Farmington, Iowa in Van Buren county. Winds were estimated at 58 mph. Another trained spotter reported pea to dime size hail falling for 10 minutes near Jesup, Iowa in Buchanan county.

A powerful spring storm system brought a late season snowfall to Eastern Iowa and Northwest Illinois. Sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph were common creating power outages. Many schools either cancelled or started classes late on Monday April 7th while law enforcement reported several accidents due to slick roads with at least 1 injury reported. Areas south of Interstate 80 saw an inch or less of snowfall, while areas between Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 30 saw 1 to 3 inches of snow. The heaviest snow fell north of U.S. Highway 30 where 3 to 6 inch snowfall amounts were common. A cooperative observer in Stanley Iowa reported 7.1 inches of snow. Due to ongoing drought conditions, the moisture from the snow was welcomed.
