Las Vegas Power Outages Caused by Weather

Episodes

June 9, 2015

Daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall elevated the flooding threat over many areas of New Mexico. The persistent wet pattern that began at the end of April and continued through May did not let up during June. Slow-moving thunderstorms around Santa Fe County created minor flooding during the early afternoon around Pojoaque. Another cluster of thunderstorms around Las Vegas prompted flash flood warnings around 5pm. A powerful storm with torrential rainfall slammed the Conchas Dam area and damaged several roads.

July 31, 2014

Strong thunderstorms with heavy rainfall developed along the Continental Divide early on the 29th and pushed slowly east toward the Rio Grande Valley through the evening hours. Several strong cells produced hail over portions of the area. Nickel size hail and heavy rain impacted Arroyo Seco. Hail was also reported near Las Vegas and Moriarty. A powerful storm near Abiquiu produced torrential rainfall, flooding, and damaging hail.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
