Power Outage in Lawton, OK

Scattered tree and power line damage reported throughout the city of Lawton. Some of the more significant reports are listed separately.

A wind gust of 103 mph was measured by a spotter just southeast of the intersection of Sheridan Road and Lee Blvd. Numerous power poles and trees were damaged near this intersection.

Power outages reported on the west side of Lawton, OK.

About 1200 power outages were reported on the 21st due to freezing rain. Freezing rain and sleet continued to fall in waves from the 20th through the 22nd, though no other impacts were reported. One inch of sleet accumulation was reported on the 22nd.

Power pole downed.

A 15 inch tree branch was snapped and landed on the roof of a home. Two large trees were also uprooted. There were also a few power poles snapped.

Freezing rain prevailed through the event with widespread 1/3 to 2/3 inch ice accumulations on trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces.

At NW 112th and NW Cache Rd., 5-6 power poles were blown down. Roof damage and blown out windows were also reported at this location.

Up to 3/4 of an inch of glaze accumulated on most elevated surfaces. Numerous trees and power lines were downed, some of which were lying across roadways. A two-mile stretch of I-44 was closed due to power lines lying on top of it, and several other state/local highways across the county were closed due to widespread power line/pole damage. Thousands were without power as a result, many for several days. The weather radio tower that serves part of southwest Oklahoma was also toppled due to heavy glaze accumulations.

The wind gust was measured in Elgin. Power lines were downed three miles north of Elgin. Monetary damages were estimated.

Power lines and power poles were blown down at several locations across the city. Six-hundred residents were without power for a short time. Monetary damages were estimated.

Numerous trees and power lines downed, causing power outages in Fletcher. Icy roads also became a problem as the event unfolded. Although more significant icing did not occur until later in the day, one accident resulted in a fatality, with three additional injuries. The accident occurred on US HWY 52, 12 miles east of Altus.

Several power lines and poles were downed across central and eastern parts of Lawton. Power lines and tree limbs were also reported down on Fort Sill.

Two power poles were downed on the east range of Fort Sill Military Reservation, south of Elgin, OK.

A wind gust downed limbs and power lines. A large tree was also downed in the yard of a house on Northwest 17th.

Wind gust was measured by ultimeter anemometer on SW 45th Street at 1404 CST. The house across the street lost many shingles on west facing slope of roof. Power lines were downed across town. The football concession stand at Cameron University was picked up and thrown into a nearby parking lot damaging 50 vehicles.

Several trees and power lines were downed. A metal storage shed was damaged with portions of the roof blocking a street.

Lightning struck an insulator on West Gore Blvd. and 67th Street causing a power outage to about 1100 homes.

In addition to hail and wind damage from severe thunderstorms, the intensity of the low pressure system which helped produce the severe weather, also resulted in very strong winds outside of thunderstorms. Before and after the severe weather sustained winds of 35 to 45 mph from the southeast and southwest with gusts to near 60 mph affected most of western Oklahoma and western north Texas. In Payne County in Oklahoma, trees were snapped; power lines were downed, and scattered roof damaged was reported, all in Cushing between 1930 CST and 2030 CST.
