Episodes

April 10, 2008

A strong low pressure system moved northeast from the southern Plains into southern Wisconsin. This resulted in a prolonged period of heavy, wet snow that caused scattered power outages. The snow was accompanied at times by thunder and lightning, and strong winds with gusts in excess of 30 mph. The hardest hit areas were Vilas County, northern Forest County and northern Florence County.||The highest snowfall totals included 11.0 inches at Phelps and Winchester (Vilas Co.), 10.0 inches at Alvin (Forest Co.), 9.9 inches at Rhinelander (Oneida Co.), 9.0 inches at Lake Tomahawk (Oneida Co.) and 8.2 inches at Long Lake (Florence Co.).

July 11, 2004

Clusters of showers and a few thunderstorms developed and moved across north-central Wisconsin during the late afternoon and early evening hours. A strong upper atmospheric disturbance enhanced rotation in the showers and storms and several funnel clouds developed. Some of the funnels touched down as weak tornadoes, including one that toppled numerous trees onto power lines and damaged a pontoon boat 8 miles southwest of Harshaw (Oneida co.). A pair of tornadoes also touched down simultaneously west of the Tomahawk airport (Lincoln co.).

April 16, 2003

A cold front that moved through Wisconsin from the north brought a shallow layer of cold air into the north-central part of the state. Significant freezing rain and sleet fell as precipitation formed in warmer air aloft and then fell through a layer of cold air near the ground. Dozens of traffic accidents were reported on icy roads. The weight of accumulated freezing rain downed trees, tree limbs and power lines. A total of about 15,000 customers of one utility company were still without power on the morning of the 18th in the Rhinelander (Oneida co.), Minocqua (Oneida co.), Eagle River (Vilas co.), Tomahawk (Lincoln co.) and Merrill (Lincoln co.) areas.

July 27, 2002

Thunderstorms developed into a line as they entered a very unstable airmass over northern Wisconsin. These storms produced strong winds that downed numerous trees and power lines as they passed through north central Wisconsin. Heavy rains and large hail were also reported with the storms.

June 10, 2000

A low pressure system dragged a cold front into northern Wisconsin. Warm and humid air interacting with the front caused showers and thunderstorms to develop. Some of the thunderstorms became severe, producing winds that downed trees and power lines in north central Wisconsin.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
