Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Ingham County

A winter storm brought heavy, wet snow to southern Lower Michigan from the afternoon of March 3 into the early morning hours of March 4. The storm produced a swath of six to ten inches of snow from Kalamazoo and Battle Creek east toward Lansing and Jackson. The weight of the snow on trees and power lines led to around 350,000 power outages across southeast sections of the state.

There were numerous reports of downed trees, tree limbs and power lines in association with severe thunderstorms. One concentrated area of damaging wind gusts occurred across eastern Ottawa county, while another area of damage occurred from near Battle Creek northeast to Lansing.

A cold front brought isolated late afternoon and evening severe storms that produced large hail, heavy rain and frequent lightning as well as isolated reports of damaging wind gusts. The most severe weather occurred in Ovid in south central Michigan where baseball sized hail was reported in addition to several downed trees and power lines.
