Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Marquette County

Winter Storm. Observers and snowfall spotters reported storm total snowfall of more than one to two and a half feet of snowfall over the higher terrain of western Marquette County from late evening April 30th to the afternoon of the May 2nd. Storm total snow near the Lake Superior shoreline was closer to 4 to 7 inches during the event. The Marquette NWS in Negaunee Township measured 27.9 inches of snowfall during the event with a May calendar day record of 19.8 inches on the 1st. This event helped push the 2022-2023 NWS Marquette seasonal snowfall total to 265.1 inches, the 4th highest on record. ||The wet and heavy snowfall combined with north winds gusting near 45 mph at times brought down trees and powerlines causing widespread power outages. Numerous roads were closed across the county due to the near impossible travel on roadways from dense and compacted wet snow. Schools were closed throughout the county on the 1st and 2nd.

Winter Storm. Storm total observer and spotter snowfall reports from late on March 31st to late morning of April 1st included 17 inches at Watson and Arnold, 14 inches at K.I. Sawyer and Little Lake, 10 inches at Gwinn and the National Weather Service in Negaunee Township and 5 to 8 inches from Clarksburg and Ishpeming through Marquette to Harvey. The heavy snow combined with strong northeast winds gusting as high as 45 mph caused power outages across portions of southern Marquette County.

April 01, 2023

Winter Storm. Two-day storm total accumulation of wet snowfall around Marquette County included between 13 and 18 inches near National Mine, 14 inches at Clarkburg, 13 inches at the National Weather Service in Negaunee Township and around 10 inches from Sands Township to near Little Lake. The heavy wet snow combined with north wind gusts between 45 and 60 mph to cause extensive tree damage and widespread power outages to nearly 15,000 customers. Schools were closed throughout the county on the 18th. ||Storm force north winds on Lake Superior whipped up waves as high as 20 feet near the Lake Superior shoreline. The pounding surf and threat of beach erosion caused Marquette city officials to close Lakeshore Boulevard from Picnic Rocks to Presque Isle Park from the 17th into the 18th.

October 16, 2022

A long-duration powerful fall storm impacted much of west and north central Upper Michigan from the 16th through the 18th with damaging winds, heavy wet snow, and some lakeshore erosion and flooding near Lake Superior. The storm and its impacts attracted national and regional media attention with the NWS Marquette staff giving numerous phone and video interviews leading up to and during the storm.
