Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Gogebic County

An approaching low pressure system from the Plains produced some freezing rain over portions of the western U.P. early on the 20th. The combination of icing on the trees and power lines and strong easterly winds caused power outages in the Calumet area on the afternoon of the 20th.

April 20, 2023

Winter Storm. Storm total snowfall reports included 12-14 inches of wet snow in the Ironwood area and over 12 inches in Wakefield. The heavy wet snow combined with north winds gusting near 30 mph caused power outages to more than 1000 customers during the event and closed or delayed many Gogebic County schools on the 17th.

October 16, 2022

High Wind. A spotter reported that strong south winds downed trees near the intersection of Van Buskirk and Landrud Roads southeast of Ironwood. Power lines were also reported down. A small brush fire was reportedly started, but put out at the time of the report.

May 09, 2022

High Wind. Xcel Energy reported at least 976 customers without power on the morning of the 16th due to the wind storm. Watersmeet Schools were also closed on the 16th.

December 15, 2021

Thunderstorm Wind. Extensive straight-line wind damage was found in and around the town of Marenisco with estimated wind speeds up to 90 mph. Some structural damage was found, but most of the damage was uprooted or snapped trees. The main structural damage was significant roof damage to a newly-built garage at the corner of Hall and Mill Streets in Marenisco where over a quarter of the metal roof and decking was stripped back and torn from the roof trusses. A continuous swath of straight-line wind damage started approximately five miles west of town to six miles southeast of town and continued into the Ottawa National Forest. Campers were trapped at Bobcat Lake Campground due to fallen trees, but no injuries were reported. Many roads were closed due to fallen trees in the area, and numerous power outages were reported. The time of the report was estimated from radar.
