Power Outage in Missouri Valley, IA

The COOP observer in Little Sioux reported that around a quarter inch of ice accumulation. This was mainly confined to trees, elevated surfaces, and power lines.

Trees up to 12 inches in diameter were downed and power was knocked out. The observer estimated the winds to be near 85 mph.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at around 70 mph downed trees and power lines in Missouri Valley.

Freezing rain accumulated between 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch over much of the county. Although winds weren't particularly strong, the weight of the ice caused areas of tree damage and scattered power outages.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at 70 mph downed large trees and power lines around 9 miles southeast of Mondamin. The winds were most likely rear flank downdraft winds that were wrapping around a tornado that was tracking near this location.

The tornado touched down near highway 30 about 1.5 miles west of the interchange between Interstate 29 and Highway 30, or about 3 miles west of Missouri Valley Iowa. The tornado was at its strongest and widest within a mile of its touchdown point, becoming weaker with more intermittent damage farther north. Near the touchdown point, a barn sustained roof damage and a windmill was knocked down. One-half mile north of Highway 30, 54 empty grain rail cars were derailed. One mile north of Highway 30, along 305th St., two residences were impacted by the tornado. A 100-year-old single family residence directly in its path was completely destroyed, with all walls collapsed and debris relocated about 50 feet north of the foundation. The debris collected over the site of a cinder block garage, which also partially collapsed. About 100 yards north of the garage site, a machine shed was collapsed onto a combine inside, which had been moved by the wind. Trees near the house sustained some broken limbs and treetops, and a power pole was snapped. The damage at this site was given an EF2 rating. Another residence one-quarter mile to its west sustained minor siding and shingle damage and windows were broken. Seven of the eight outbuildings at that residence were collapsed, with debris strewn into nearby fields. Damage at the two houses indicated a path width of one quarter mile at that point, the widest along the path of the tornado. The tornado continued northward, overturning two semis on Interstate 29. From there to a point about 3 miles southwest of Magnolia, near the intersection of the Loess Hills Trail and Melody Oaks Trail, intermittent light damage to trees and roofs of a couple of outbuildings was noted. From this point, the survey team determined the damage path narrowed to 100 yards or less based on scattered tree and outbuilding damage, with EF0 intensity north of Interstate 29.

A mix of freezing rain and sleet accumulated around 1/2 inch over most of the county. A period of snow followed the mix precipitation with upwards of 3 to 5 inches of snow reported over the northwest half of the county.|Although the mixed precipitation created hazardous driving conditions,|accumulation on trees and power lines was somewhat limited.

The tornado eventually reached EF3 strength in Monona county when it hit a boyscout camp where 4 fatalities and 48 injuries occurred. The tornado crossed into Harrison county near mile marker 97 on Interstate 29 where a semi-truck was flipped. The tornado snapped power poles northeast of there with an estimated strength of EF2 in Harrison county. The tornado then crossed into Monona county Iowa about 4 miles north of Little Sioux.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at over 60 mph knocked down large tree limbs and toppled a dead tree knocking power out to the area.

Thunderstorm winds estimated at 60 mph caused 4 or 5 trees to fall onto power lines in Missouri Valley.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at over 60 mph blew down numerous tree limbs across town causing a power outage over around 1/3 of the town.

Thunderstorm wind gusts estimated at 60 to 70 mph damaged trees and snapped off 3 power poles near Interstate 29 southwest of Missouri Valley. Also a semi-trailer truck was blown off the Interstate. Near town some power lines were downed and a garage was blown off of its foundation.

Rain changed to freezing rain across much of Harrison county during the predawn hours Sunday 2/6 and ice accumulations of 1/4 inch were reported. Several inches of snow fell on top of the ice as the precipitation changed over to snow during the morning hours. Little or no tree or power line damage was reported from this storm.

This tornado touched down just inside the Pottawattamie county line near highway 34 and Interstate 680. It then tracked near Beebeetown, then to near Persia before crossing into Shelby county southwest of Portsmouth. The tornado was caught on film by a local TV meteorologist as well as a storm chaser. The tornado stayed mainly in open county, but it did down some trees and power lines.
