Several periods of dense freezing fog from late January into early February brought heavy riming/ice buildup on power lines across much of north central South Dakota. The heavy riming/ice buildup caused utility poles to lean, lines to sag, and wires to come into contact and fail. Most of the outages were west of Highway 281 to the Missouri River. The rime/ice buildup in some places was the circumference of a quart jar weighting down the lines close enough to the ground to touch.
Sixty to eighty mph winds blew through the Mobridge area downing several trees and many branches, ripping some shingles off roofs, and downing some power lines. Also, several buildings received damage.
