Episodes
Strong and gusty northwest winds developed over South-Central Wisconsin behind a cold front trailing from rapidly strengthening low pressure that tracked across northern Wisconsin into northern Lower Michigan on Thursday, September 29th. The resulting tight pressure gradient over the state produced 850 mb winds of 45 knots (52 mph)and 925 mb winds of 35 to 40 knots (40 to 46 mph). Surface winds gusted between 50 mph and 68 mph in Green County, driven by 3-hourly pressure rises on the order of 4 millibars. The strong winds toppled trees and downed power lines across South-Central Wisconsin. The strong winds affected all of Wisconsin, with all of the state parks on the Door Peninsula closed for the entire following weekend to allow crews time to clear debris and restore power.
The first of two rounds of severe weather to affect south-central and/or southeast Wisconsin on August 18, 2005, occurred during the early morning hours. A cluster of thunderstorm cells merged into a line that bowed in Lafayette County. The resultant hurricane-force winds damaged several structures and leveled trees and power-lines, especially in Lafayette County. This activity fired up north of a warm front found over Iowa and Illinois. Warm and unstable air was pushed up and over the warm front, thus triggering the early morning thunderstorm activity. Later in the day, the 2nd round of severe weather, consisting of a record-setting tornado outbreak, occurred primarily during a 4-hour period starting at 1500CST.
Isolated severe thunderstorm produced powerful downburst winds (estimated to 56 kts, or 65 mph) that blew a shed down, forced the roof of a barn to cave in, uprooted several large trees, and toppled some power lines.
An isolated thunderstorm popped up near Monroe (Green Co.), and briefly generated powerful winds which toppled several large trees. This was the 2nd of five consecutive days with some kind of severe convection across south-central and/or southeast Wisconsin. Synoptically, a series of short wave troughs in the upper atmosphere moved east across Wisconsin while a surface frontal boundary oscillated north and south across southern Wisconsin.
A cluster of severe thunderstorms moved east/southeast across parts of south-central Wisconsin during the pre-dawn hours. Downburst winds gusting to 52 to 56 knots (60 to 65 mph) toppled large trees. Some of the tree debris pulled down a few power lines which resulted in the loss of electrical power to dozens of customers. In addition, highway signs in Dodgeville were blown down by the powerful winds. Synoptically, low pressure was over southwest Iowa with a warm front extending east to east-central Iowa. The responsible storms initially developed over northwest Iowa. Unstable, moist air with surface dewpoints in the lower to mid 70s was found south of the warm front. During the time of the downburst winds, surface temperatures over southwest and south-central Wisconsin were around 60!

What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
