A swath of thunderstorm straight line wind damage occurred within an area almost five miles long and around three miles wide near Elkin. The damage consisted of multiple locations with scattered to numerous trees and power lines downed. Additionally, there was wind damage to some small barns and outbuildings, and trees and tree limbs were downed on many homes. In one case of home damage, a sunroom was partially destroyed by a fallen tree. One person was trapped under a fallen tree, sustained minor injuries and required hospitalization. Damaging winds across Surry County prompted 97 calls to emergency officials about downed trees, 36 calls about power outages, four calls about fires (presumably due to power lines arcing), one call of a tree fallen onto a house, one call of a tree fallen onto a car, and two reports of debris in a roadway. Wind gusts estimated to be in the 25 to 35 mph range were common during the passage of Tropical Storm Michael, with locally higher gusts likely. The AWOS at the Mount Airy/Surry County Airport (KMWK) measured a maximum gust of 30 mph. These gusty winds, when combined with the effects of saturated ground due to heavy rain from the storm, resulted in hundreds of trees, as well as numerous power lines, down across the county.

Beginning as early as Friday the 14th, Emergency Services had already reported eight separate instances of trees or power lines brought down by strong winds. Winds would continue through Sunday when a rain soaked ground in Surry County would help to bring down many more trees.

Specifically, trees were blown down on Country Club Road, Springs Road, Highway 52 just west of town, Westlake Drive, and East Pine Street. Strong northwest winds on the backside of a deepening coastal low picked up and threw an aluminum garage into the street. A roof was also blown off a mobile home, and numerous trees and power lines were down across the county. There were also transformer explosions and electrical fires reported. A mobile home received heavy damage when a large tree fell on it, however all occupants escaped injury. In all, as many as 200 reports of downed trees were reported. Five fairly significant incidences of damage to structures, as well as many instances of trees falling on vehicles were reported.

Snow broke out across the county late Thursday evening and continued through the day Friday. It mixed with sleet, rain and freezing rain during the day Friday when warmer air moved in aloft. The precipitation ended as snow showers Friday evening. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches were common.||The snow, combined with the freezing rain and rain on top brought down numerous trees and power lines across the county. Around 300 calls of downed trees were called in, and some car ports and vehicles were damaged. Over 200 car and tractor trailer accidents were also reported, with portions of highways 52 and 77 closed at times. At one point around 4000 people were without power.||There was one indirect death from the event, when a 74 year old man had a heart attack while shoveling snow.
