Munising Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

May 1, 2023 - Winter Storm

Storm total snowfall amounts across the county through the afternoon of the 2nd included an estimated 19 inches 11 miles southwest of Munising and 16 inches at Eben Junction. The wet and heavy snowfall brought down trees and powerlines causing power outages. There were numerous road closures across the county due to the near impossible travel on roadways from dense and compacted wet snow. Schools were closed throughout the county on the 2nd and Au Train-Onoto Schools were closed on the 1st.

April 1, 2023 - Winter Storm

Observer and social media snowfall reports from the morning of the 1st included an estimated 12 inches at Chatham, 9 inches at Munising and 5-6 inches in the Au Train-Deerton area. The heavy snow combined with strong northeast winds gusting as high as 45 mph caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow and sporadic power outages across portions of Alger County.

October 18, 2022 - High Wind

North wind gusts gusted around 60 mph through much of the late morning hours at Grand Marias with a peak gust of 63 mph at 950 am EDT. The Munising ASOS recorded a peak wind gust of 58 at 1103 am EDT. The high wind combined with 24-hour wet snow amounts approaching four inches at some locations caused some tree damage and power outages to nearly 1500 customers across the county.

May 9, 2022 - High Wind

Trees were reported down on power lines along M-28 near Deerton, about a half mile south of the store in Rumely, and on West Onota Street in Munising.

March 22, 2022 - Winter Weather

Widespread freezing rain of nearly 0.25 inches or more caused treacherous and icy road conditions and some tree damage and power outages across Alger County during the period. Au Train-Onota and Munising Schools were cancelled on the 23rd due to the impacts from the freezing rain.
