Power Outage in Munising, MI

Storm total snowfall amounts across the county through the afternoon of the 2nd included an estimated 19 inches 11 miles southwest of Munising and 16 inches at Eben Junction. The wet and heavy snowfall brought down trees and powerlines causing power outages. There were numerous road closures across the county due to the near impossible travel on roadways from dense and compacted wet snow. Schools were closed throughout the county on the 2nd and Au Train-Onoto Schools were closed on the 1st.

Observer and social media snowfall reports from the morning of the 1st included an estimated 12 inches at Chatham, 9 inches at Munising and 5-6 inches in the Au Train-Deerton area. The heavy snow combined with strong northeast winds gusting as high as 45 mph caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow and sporadic power outages across portions of Alger County.

North wind gusts gusted around 60 mph through much of the late morning hours at Grand Marias with a peak gust of 63 mph at 950 am EDT. The Munising ASOS recorded a peak wind gust of 58 at 1103 am EDT. The high wind combined with 24-hour wet snow amounts approaching four inches at some locations caused some tree damage and power outages to nearly 1500 customers across the county.

Trees were reported down on power lines along M-28 near Deerton, about a half mile south of the store in Rumely, and on West Onota Street in Munising.

Widespread freezing rain of nearly 0.25 inches or more caused treacherous and icy road conditions and some tree damage and power outages across Alger County during the period. Au Train-Onota and Munising Schools were cancelled on the 23rd due to the impacts from the freezing rain.

The Munising ASOS measured a peak northwest wind gust of 63 mph early morning on the 19th. The strong winds also caused power outages to 230 residences around the Wetmore area as noted on an UPPCO outage map.

There was a report from a school bus driver relayed through police dispatch of a power line down across Powell Lake Road south of Wetmore.

The Alger-Delta Co-op outage map showed numerous customers without power in and around Grand Marais due to strong winds on the morning of the 11th.

The observer 11 miles south of Grand Marais reported 12 inches of lake effect snow for the 24-hour period ending on the morning of the 2nd. There was also an estimated amount of 8.5 inches in 12 hours in Shingleton. The snow load in Munising of 5 to 6 inches on the high voltage lines tripped the power off in Munising for an estimated 500 customers.

The Munising ASOS measured strong south wind gusts during the late afternoon and evening of the 29th. Gusts peak at 58 mph several times during the period. High winds caused a power outage in Au Train during this time.

The local TV-6 station reported nearly 3040 power outages in Alger County via UPPCO due to high winds and heavy rain.

Significant storm total snowfall amounts over the county included nearly 20 inches at Eben Junction, 16 inches at Munising and 15 inches at Chatham. The wet, heavy snowfall combined with strong northwest winds gusting as high as 50 mph also caused extensive tree damage and downed multiple trees in Munising across Highway M-94. Hundreds of power outages were reported across the county.

The observer 11 miles southwest of Munising measured 12 inches of storm total snowfall. The dense, heavy snow combined with northerly winds gusting to 40 to 50 mph at times caused damage to trees and power lines and widespread power outages throughout the region. The storm forced many businesses to close on the 27th.

There was a public report of 6 to 8 inches of lake effect snow in 12 hours at Munising. Local law enforcement reported hazardous snow covered roads. Strong gusty winds resulted in blowing snow and several power outages.

Winds gusting at or above 60 mph at times downed trees, power poles and power lines across much of the county on the 24th. Au Train-Onoto and Munising public schools were closed on the 24th due the intense fall storm.

Over 100 12-24 inch diameter trees were snapped and uprooted five miles west-northwest of Au Train. Two trees were down on a house along Rock River Road. Power lines were also reported down.

Observers measured between two and four inches of lake enhanced snow during the event. Northwest winds gusting between 40 and 50 mph also caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow and sporadic power outages.

The measured peak wind gust at the Grand Marais GLOS during the period was 58 mph. The strong south to southwest winds knocked down trees and power lines causing power outages across portions of Alger County on the morning of the 24th.

Observers south and east of Grand Marais measured between 12 and 14 inches storm total snowfall. The wet snow combined with north wind gusts to 50 mph caused power outages and several minor accidents in the Munising area. Many area schools were also closed on the 20th and 21st.

Strong south winds ahead of a cold front caused downed power lines and knocked out power to more than 1200 customers in Munising.

The Alger County Sheriff reported numerous trees down across roads and power lines across the county. Several of the trees were greater than 12 inches in diameter.

The GLOS at Grand Marais measured wind gusts to 65 mph during the event. The high winds downed trees and caused some sporadic power outages for communities along the Lake Superior shoreline.

Fallen trees knocked down power lines in downtown Munising. Wind gusts over 60 mph were reported in Grand Marais.

Wind gusts in excess of 65 mph were measured at the Munising ASOS at 930 am and at the Grand Marais GLOS site at 1040 am during the wind event. ||Throughout much of Munising, large trees and power lines were knocked down across roadways or driveways, blocking traffic and/or causing minor damage. Debris from homes including roofing shingles, corrugated plastic sheeting and trim from windows and doors littered Munising streets. The strong winds also toppled a large spruce tree onto the side of the Bowerman Funeral Home on Superior Street. A few minor accidents were attributed to the poor visibility brought on by the lake effect snow and blowing snow accompanying the storm. ||Eleven miles southwest of Munising, numerous trees were toppled along Sixteen-Mile Road.

A wind gust of 58 mph was reported at the Munising ASOS. The Alger County Sheriff reported downed tree limbs and power lines from AuTrain to Munising.

A spotter near Au Train reported frequent power outages and a large tree down. The Munising automated observing site reported wind gusts frequently over 40 mph with a few gusts over 50 mph. Schools were closed throughout the county on the 4th and 5th due to frequent whiteout conditions in heavy snow and blowing snow. Snowfall totals from the 4th into the evening of the 5th included 16 inches at both Shingleton and Munising.
