A survey conducted by the National Weather Service concluded an EF-1 tornado first touched down near Adrian Highway, just east of Sabrina Lane and caused some minor tree damage. The tornado then moved nearly parallel to Adrian Highway and caused extensive tree damage and damage to numerous farm buildings and sheds. Power lines were also reportedly down in the area. As the tornado continued to move east, just east of Hucks Road, it snapped dozens of trees. Two homes sustained damage in this area, one of which had windows blown out. The tornado crossed Johnson Shelly Road and stayed just north of New Dawn Lane causing dozens of snapped trees. Near the intersection of New Dawn Lane and Highway 19, a small barn was destroyed and a large shed was completely damaged. The tornado continued east and crossed New Home Circle where it nearly toppled a single wide trailer and caused damage to a couple other trailers. The tornado lifted in a field just west of Gause Road after being on the ground for about 10 minutes and just under 5 miles. The tornado had estimated maximum winds of 110 mph.

Damage in this area included scattered tree damage. A nearby trailer park along Sleepy Hollow Lane suffered primarily minor damage to a couple of structures. A tree in the mobile park was uprooted and fell onto a mobile home. There were several large trees uprooted in this area. As the microburst moved to the southeast it caused significant damage. A poorly secured metal roof of a mobile home on Singing Pines Drive was completely lifted from the home. Several large hardwoods were uprooted along Singing Pines Drive and nearby Old Railroad Road. Power lines were also reported down. The microburst weakened, but severe winds still uprooted several trees and downed large limbs along Wayside Road, Juniper Bay Road and Dunn Short Cut Road. The ground was very saturated and almost all of the uprooted trees were hardwoods. The maximum path width was 1.8 miles and the path length was 2.35 miles. Six people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries and quickly released.

Two transformers exploded resulting in more than 800 customers without power from near 82nd Ave N to near 67th Ave N. There were also reports of a few limbs down and yard furniture displaced by the wind. Lightning may have contributed to the power outages.

Ernesto moved off the Florida coast at Cape Canaveral on the morning of August 31st, and reached tropical storm strength by late morning while off the Georgia coast. Tropical Storm Ernesto made landfall on the eastern coast of Brunswick County NC near 10:30 pm EST.The South Carolina coast was for the most part spared from tropical storm Ernesto, as the strong winds occurred in North Carolina. Winds did not reach tropical storm strength on the SC coast, with the strongest sustained winds of 35 mph recorded at Myrtle Beach Airport. The main impact in South Carolina was rain, with rainfall totals ranging from just under two inches at Gallivants Ferry, to over seven inches with ponding on roadways at North Myrtle Beach. There were isolated power outages during the storm.

Hurricane Charley initially made landfall on the west coast of Florida between Fort Myers and Tampa as a category four hurricane. The storm crossed Florida, and exited the coast as a category one. About 180,000 people evacuated the Grand Strand as Charley continued northeast, making landfall again near Cape Romain as a weak category one hurricane with sustained winds at 75 mph. It moved up the coast and then inland around Myrtle Beach. In Horry and Georgetown counties, insurance claims totaled $5 million, mostly along the Grand Strand. There were downed trees, roof damage, and flooding along the coast in this area. 65,000 residents lost power, and the estimate for cleanup in Georgetown county alone was $1.5 million. As Charley moved northeast, Brunswick county was hit the hardest, with peak winds around 85 mph. Damage was extensive, with 2231 homes damaged, 231 with major damage, and 40 homes destroyed in the county for a total of $6.3 million. Many beach homes were damaged, with 221 homes damaged at Sunset Beach alone. Crop damage in Brunswick county was also widespread, with 50 percent of the tobacco crop lost, and 30 percent of the corn and field vegetables destroyed. New Hanover county was the next hardest hit, with many business damaged in Wilmington and surrounding cities. The majority of the county had power outages from downed limbs on power lines. Rainfall ranged from two inches near the coast, to around four inches from eastern Bladen county, south through Columbus county. Vegetative debris was widespread, plugging storm drains and contributing to ponding and flooding the next day. Storm surge was minimal, with some minor overwash. Thankfully, only a few minor injuries were reported.

A low pressure system caused heavy showers and wind gusts 30 to 50 mph that downed a few powerlines...but widespread rainwater flooding along the Grand Strand caused more serious problems. Radar rainfall estimates and local reports indicated 2-4 inches of rain in a couple of hours, and 6 inches to 2 feet of water flooded many roads and intersections. Police reported 30 roads were barricaded. A 7 year old boy drowned when he ventured into a flooded ditch along Sycamore Street near the entrance of Sea Gate Village.

Hurricane Dorian strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane as it moved through the Bahamas, with devastating damage. It weakened as it moved up the eastern seaboard. The hurricane was a strong Category 1 as it passed just east of Bald Head Island. The hurricane spawned many tornadoes across eastern South and North Carolina. Rainfall amounts along the coast ranged from ten to fifteen inches with lesser amounts inland. Hurricane force winds remained offshore, with several sites along the coast reporting gusts over 60 mph. Damage was due mainly from the tornadoes, with many reports of flash flooding. Power outages were minimal. The hurricane exited the region by the afternoon of September 6th.

Hurricane Florence began its long Atlantic trek from the Cape Verde Islands in early September. It made landfall near Wrightsville Beach during the morning of September 14th. The barometric pressure at landfall was 959 millibars, or 28.32 inches.The strongest winds were recorded at 106 mph at Cape Lookout, as well as 105 mph measured at the Wilmington International Airport. In addition to the strong storm surge, there was historic rainfall totals of 20 to 25 inches, with isolated totals of 35 inches in parts of Bladen and Robeson counties. Flash Flooding was severe and widespread, with many communities experiencing flooding for the first time. River flooding was epic, with dozens of main highways impassible. Significant flooding occurred for weeks after the storm had departed. The hurricane spawned 19 tornadoes, one causing significant damage to 8 structures in the Sydney community in Columbus county. The community at Lake Waccamaw experienced more damage than Hurricane Floyd in 1999, the previous benchmark for the area. Particulars for South Carolina: Fatalities: 9, Homes with major damage: 543. Coastal evacuations: 455,000 evacuated. Power outages: 187,000. Population shelters: 68 with occupancy of 7500 at its peak. Cost: About 600 million dollars. In Marlboro County alone 34 state/56 county roads were damaged.
