Tornado. At 1801CST, a tornado touched down 1 mile north of Burwell and traveled 5.2 miles before dissipating 5 miles northeast of Burwell. The tornado traveled northeast where the storm damage observed included several large tree trunks and wooden power poles snapped. The tornado crossed Highway 11 and overturned a center irrigation pivot system and downed additional large limbs before dissipating at 1815CST. Peak winds were estimated at 120 mph with the tornado rated an EF-2. Maximum path width was 500 yards.

Blizzard. Blizzard conditions began across Garfield County by 5 pm CST on April 4, 2009. Snowfall amounts ranged from 4 to 7 inches. Strong north winds of 30 to 45 mph caused blowing snow and reduced visibility to less than a quarter mile during the late afternoon and overnight hours. Snow drifts up to 6 feet high closed roads and the strong winds caused power outages. Several newborn calves died in the storm.

Winter Storm. Freezing rain preceded the heavy snow with ice accumulations up to a quarter inch in the eastern half of the county causing some downed power lines and tree branches. Storm total snowfall amounts ranged from 5 to 11 inches. The snow combined with winds of 15 to 30 mph causing blowing and drifting.
