New Hampton Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Freezing rain fell across Chickasaw County during the afternoon and evening of March 23rd before ending as light snow during the morning of the 24th. Around a quarter inch of ice accumulation was reported along with 1 to 2 inches of snow. Some power outages occurred across the county because of the ice accumulations.
Northwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph produced a period of blizzard conditions across Chickasaw County. Whiteout conditions occurred during the blizzard and the blowing snow caused severe drifting to occur that closed several roads. Power outages occurred as the heavy, wet snow and the high winds combined to bring down power lines and tree branches. Most of the schools in the county were either closed or delayed the start of classes on both the 20th and 21st. The highest reported snowfall amount was 6 inches in North Washington and the highest recorded wind speed was 50 mph from the mesonet weather observing equipment near Ionia.
Numerous garages and buildings were damaged across New Hampton. Power lines and approximately 100 trees were also blown down.
North winds between 25 and 35 mph with higher gusts, created a period of blizzard conditions across Chickasaw County during the morning and afternoon of the 20th. As a result of the blizzard, roads were closed, vehicles became trapped in the snow, some power outages occurred and all schools in the county were closed. The highest reported snow total was 6.0 inches in New Hampton and North Washington.
