Power Outage in Newberry, MI

An estimated one-quarter inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain occurred over Luce County on the morning of the 5th. Utility companies also reported many downed trees and power lines resulting in power outages impacting several thousand customers.

Social media snowfall reports from the morning of the 1st included 12 inches at Halfway Lake and Newberry. The heavy snow combined with strong northeast winds gusting as high as 45 mph caused considerable drifting of snow and widespread power outages across portions of Luce County.

North wind gusts reaching 40 mph at times caused power outages to nearly 1200 customers in the Newberry area on the 18th.

Snowfall reports over an approximate 16-hour period included 14 inches near Dollarville and 12 to 14 inches in the Newberry area. The heavy snowfall combined with north winds gusting to 35 mph at times caused power outages over portions of the county.

The Luce County Road Commission observed numerous large trees downed across Luce County during the afternoon of the 11th due to strong east winds. The Cloverland Electric outage map showed approximately 300 customers without power west of Newberry and south of McMillan also due to the strong winds.

Local media reported nearly 2000 power outages across Luce, Schoolcraft and Delta counties via Cloverland Electric just before 5 AM local time due to high winds and heavy rain.

Northwest winds gusting as high as 40 to 45 mph caused nearly 40 power outages over portions of Luce County on the afternoon of the 13th as reported by the Cloverland Electric Coop.

The observer in Newberry measured nine inches of wet, heavy snow in less than 12 hours. The dense snow combined with northerly winds gusting to 30 to 35 mph at times caused damage to trees and some power lines. Businesses were closed on the 27th due to the storm.

Freezing rain accumulated between one to two tenths of an inch of ice in Newberry from late evening on the 11th through the early morning of the 12th. The freezing rain and east winds gusting over 30 mph at times caused scattered power outages over the county. The freezing rain also mixed with snow and sleet at times on the morning of the 12th. Tahquamenon Area Schools were delayed two hours on the 12th due to the impacts from the mixed precipitation and gusty winds.

There was a public report of two tenths of an inch of freezing rain early on the 25th which coated trees, roads and power lines in McMillan.

Observers in Newberry and seven miles south of Pine Stump Junction measured nine inches of lake effect snow in approximately 15 hours. There was also a public report of 5 to 6 inches of lake effect snow in 12 hours near McMillan. Strong gusty winds resulted in multiple power outages.

Observers across Luce County measured between two and four inches of lake enhanced snow during the event. Northwest winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph also caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow and lowered visibility. Sporadic power outages were also reported.

The Luce County Sheriff reported that a downed tree broke power lines on Vulcan Street in Newberry. The size and type of tree was unknown. The damage report was relayed via social media.

The Newberry AWOS measured a peak wind gust to 53 mph during the period. The strong southwest wind gusts knocked down some trees and power lines causing sporadic power outages across Luce County on the morning of the 24th.

The Luce County Emergency Manager reported trees down across northern Luce County. A tree fell on a tent at the Blind Sucker Campground and at Muskallonge State Park power lines were down as well. No injuries were reported.

The Luce County Sheriff reported numerous trees down across the county resulting in several power outages.

Observers from Newberry to Two Heart measured from 0.10 inch to 0.30 inch of freezing rain on the morning of the 16th. The Luce County Sheriff reported a widespread glaze on elevated surfaces as ice accumulation caused minor damage to tree limbs. One broken tree limb fell on a power line and started a fire.

Wind gusts estimated to be over 60 mph caused downed trees and sporadic power outages...mainly for communities along the Lake Superior shoreline.

Numerous trees and power lines were reported down on County Road 441 in the Hiawatha National Forest. Tahquamenon Area Schools closed on the 27th due to the storm.
