Power Outage in Newcastle, OK

The fourth tornado of the outbreak caused tree and power pole damage west of Cole between State Highway 76 and Rockwell Avenue north of 260th Street.

This tornado developed just west of Pennsylvania Avenue about 1/2 mile south of 290th Street where it took the roof off an outbuilding. The tornado moved east-northeast damaging a mobile home along 290th Street, and then snapped a couple of power poles as moved into the city limits of Goldsby just east of SW 24th Avenue. The tornado caused roof and fence damage in a neighborhood near NW 12th Avenue and Center Road in Goldsby before moving across the Goldsby airport damaging hangars. The tornado then crossed the Canadian River into Cleveland County.

A quasi-linear convective system of thunderstorms produced a large area of wind damage that began about 8 miles southwest of Purcell, and moved northeast through Purcell and then into Cleveland County. This area of wind damage was up to 3 miles wide. Eight to ten homes had shingle or window damage, and trees and power lines were downed throughout the area. There was also some brick damage to a hotel.

Fences were blown down on highway 37. A large tree and several small to medium branches were also blown down. The tree took out a power ine.

Freezing rain prevailed through the event with widespread 1/3 to 1/2 inch ice accumulations on trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces. Off duty NWS employee reported 1/2 inch of ice in Newcastle.

This tornado is labeled C1 (Segment #2 of the Chickasha-Blanchard-Newcastle tornado). Significant damage continued as the violent tornado moved over the McClain county border. This may have been the strongest portion of this tornado, with wind speeds near 200 mph. Well-built homes were destroyed, with some cleaned off of their foundation. A concrete dome home was severely damage, mainly by the flying debris. Trees were debarked or destroyed. Very little was left standing for the first few miles into McClain county. Fairly consistent EF-3, with brief periods of EF-4 damage occurred as the tornado neared/crossed Highway 9, near the Highway 76 junction. The tornado began to weaken as it moved toward the Cleveland county border, with mainly trees and power poles/lines snapped. The tornado continued into Cleveland County. Monetary damage estimates were not available.

A 2nd misocyclone moved through parts of McClain and Cleveland counties. Damage was first noted in Newcastle along 16th Street where minor damage was reported to law furniture. Damage was reported to trees and tin outbuildings, as well minor damage to lawn furniture and trampolines, as the circulation moved east-southeast. Four large and five typical-size power poles were knocked down near the Community Christian School, and a semi-trailer blown over near I-35 and Highway 77. More damage to trees, flag poles, and fencing continued until just south of Lindsay Street east of Interstate 35. A large billboard sustained damage at this location. Monetary damages were not available.

At least a half of an inch of glaze accumulated on exposed, elevated surfaces, with some areas receiving near 3/4 of an inch. Widespread tree and power line damage was reported with the glaze accumulation. The precipitation briefly changed over to sleet by late afternoon, with about a half of an inch of sleet accumulating on top of the glaze.

Widespread tree damage was reported county-wide. Power lines and power poles were downed due to the ice accumulation, with hundreds of residents without power. Several business' also were without power. The icy roads caused several traffic accidents, the majority of slick spots were on bridges and other elevated surfaces.
