Power Outage FAQs
What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.

I work from home and this is not good for my wages or the people housed in my household. I am unable to feed them and I have refrigerator and freezer full of food that may go bad. This is not good business... We are cold and the pipes may also freeze. How much longer do we have to deal with this? Will we get a credit to our Bill's? This is a huge inconvenience...

Power went out at 5:28am, 12/24/2022. Already cold, even though heat ran all night. Had the thermostat set at 68, but constantly stayed around 67, trying to reach 69. We had a separate heater on and we’re cozy in the bedroom, with the door closed. Around 4:am, turned thermostat up to 70, trying to warm up the rest of the house, as we also have guests for the holidays. Now, the power’s out. No central heat, not electric heater, already around 65 in the house and getting colder by the minute.
