Power Outage in Port Gibson, MS

Shortly after midnight on July 10th, an intense microburst occurred around Grand Gulf in Clairborne county. This swath of damage started at the MS River near the Military Park and pushed south southeast to southeast and moved over the Grand Gulf Nuclear facility. Damage from this microburst was primarily in the form of uprooted or broken trees. Several hundred trees were damaged. Additionally, several power lines and poles were taken down. There was one camper that had a large tree through it. Several roads were blocked or blocked in multiple locations in this area. Roads that were blocked included Grand Gulf Road, Back Grand Gulf Road, Frazier Road and Bald Hill Road. Damage was consistent with peak winds in the 70-85 mph range. The damage swath was almost 5 miles long and rough 3.5 miles wide.

After light sleet occurred late in the morning, freezing rain during the afternoon and evening resulted in heavy ice accumulations of around 0.50 inches. The weight of so much ice downed trees and power lines, resulting in widespread damage and power outages across the county.

Power lines were blown down on Highway 18. Two homes sustained damage.

The tornado touched down to the northwest of Buckins Creek basin and moved more east northeast, beginning on Moss Down Lane. It continued along a three to four mile portion of Highway 547. This tornado began to widen and caused widespread tree damage all along the path, especially along Highway 547. Hundreds of trees were snapped and uprooted and many power lines were broken or power poles snapped near Mt. Pleasant Road, Coleman Road and Northeast Smith Road. In addition, some homes had trees fall on them or had tin peeled back off of the roof. One 18 wheeler tractor trailer was overturned. The tornado was at its widest along Highway 547 and damaged reached high end EF1 levels. It continued past Northeast Smith Road into another creek basin, causing more widespread tree damage. It continued to Henneberry Road before lifting. The maximum estimated winds with this tornado was 110mph.

This tornado touched down just south of Highway 28. A few trees were downed and snapped in this area. As it continued northeast through a rural area, numerous trees were snapped and uprooted. It then crossed McBride Road and Pap Goza Road, uprooting and snapping many large trees. It also snapped a power pole and caused extensive roof damage to a few chicken houses. It continued northeast into Claiborne County, crossing Hudson Road and Beech Grove Road. The tornado ended near Northeast Smith Road, snapping a couple of trees before lifting. A tornado debris signature was also noted on radar during this event. The total length of the tornado path was 14.46 miles and the maximum wind speed was 105 mph.

Here many trees were snapped and uprooted along with power lines down and damage to a few sheds. The remainder of the path consisted of damage to trees. Maximum estimated winds were 95 mph.

It then moved across Gullett Road where it destroyed 3 large outbuildings, heavily damaged the roof of a brick home, and snapped numerous trees. The tornado next crossed Campbell Swamp Road where it reached its maximum width and snapped hundreds of trees. The tornado then moved nearly parallel to Price Hill Road again snapping and uprooting many trees. One of the trees fell on a house causing significant damage. The tornado continued downing more trees, but then lifted as it crossed Jeff Davis Road. Maximum estimated wind speeds were 120 mph.

This tornado first touched down along Highway 573 just south of Cooter Point. It tracked northeast across Highway 892 and 126 and then crossed Highway 65 a few miles northwest of St. Joseph. The tornado then crossed Lake Bruin and traveled north of that lake before crossing the southern end of Lake St. Joseph. The tornado ended as it touched the eastern bank of the river in Claiborne County. Numerous homes...farms and outbuildings were significantly damaged by the tornado. Much of the damage to the homes was to the roofs with many being blown off. A water treatment plant received major damage and an antebellum home also received significant damage. A grain silo received a huge dent from the tornado and an 18 wheeler was flipped over. Hundreds of trees were snapped and uprooted along the path and numerous power poles were snapped. One injury was noted northwest of St. Joseph. Maximum winds were around 125 mph.

Tropical storm force winds occurred across Claiborne County as the outer edges of Hurricane Gustav moved across southern Louisiana. Numerous trees and several power lines were blown down. Tree damage was scattered across the county as wind gusts peaked between 40 and 50 mph.

Several trees were blown down around Port Gibson with a string of power lines taken down along Rodney Road from a downed tree. A couple units at the Magnolia Apartments were damaged by fallen trees. Numerous other trees were damaged outside of Port Gibson across the county. Off Greenwood Street, a shed was damaged with a portion of the tin roof thrown into some trees.
