Episodes
Strong low pressure tracked north across New England and Quebec province...to the west of the region...from the 29th into the 30th. The low drew a cold front across the region during the 30th. A strong southerly low level jet crossed the region in advance of the front. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph...with gusts of 45 to around 60 mph...were common in advance of the front. A 62 mph wind gust was measured at Bar Harbor. In addition...a narrow line of heavy convective showers developed along the front which helped mix stronger winds aloft to the surface. The greater impacts of the squall line occurred across portions of eastern Aroostook county where wind gusts were locally estimated up to around 70 mph.|The winds toppled or snapped numerous trees and broke branches...which in many instances brought down power lines. Power outages across northern and eastern Maine peaked at nearly 30,000 customers during the afternoon of the 30th. Approximately half of these outages were around the greater Bangor area in southern Penobscot county. Some trees were toppled on to homes resulting in varying degrees of structural damage. The winds also ripped shingles and siding from some structures along with damaging roofs. The aluminum roof was torn from a residential building in Mapleton...northeast Aroostook county. The roof was also partially torn from an aircraft hanger at the former Loring Air Force Base...also in northeast Aroostook county...from estimated 70 mph wind gusts associated with the squall line. Fallen trees and downed wires led to the closure of some roads across the region. Wind impacts were particularly concentrated along the Downeast coast...southern Penobscot county and portions of eastern Aroostook county. Trees still mostly leaved...along with wet ground...helped enhance the wind damage. Across the remainder of northern and eastern Maine sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph...with gusts up to around 50 mph...also brought down trees and power lines.
Strong low pressure tracking northeast along the Saint Lawrence River Valley drew a cold front across the region through the morning and afternoon hours of the 31st. A strong low level jet moved across the region in advance of the front. South to southwest winds gusted to 50 to 60 mph at times in advance of the front across much of the region inland from the coast...with 60 to 70 mph gusts along the Downeast coast.|The winds snapped branches and brought down numerous trees across Downeast areas which contributed to extensive power outages. At the time of peak outages...during the late afternoon and evening...nearly 23000 customers were without power Downeast. Numerous trees were reported down in Bangor...Springfield...Burlington...Orono...Corrina and Corinth along with towns along the coast. The metal roof was torn from a structure in Old Town. Lesser tree damage and power outages were reported across northern areas. A narrow line of convectively enhanced winds...without lightning...also crossed the region in advance of the cold front. This line produced localized wind damage around Easton... in northeast Aroostook county...where an empty tractor trailer was blown over and a garage lost its roof. The winds entered the garage through an open door...lifting the roof from the structure. Scattered power outages were reported across northern Maine.
Several supercell thunderstorms with very strong damaging winds and large hail moved across northeast Aroostook county during the evening of the 22nd. The storms also produced isolated flash flooding. The storms formed with an upper disturbance crossing the region. The greatest impacts occurred in an area from Ashland...to Caribou...to Fort Fairfield where extensive tree damage and numerous power outages were reported.
Strong east to southeast winds occurred along the Downeast coast in advance of low pressure lifting northward along an occluded front. The strongest winds occurred during the late morning and early afternoon hours of the 17th. The strong winds snapped branches and toppled trees which brought down power lines contributing to power outages. At one point...around 750 customers were without power in Hancock County mostly around the towns of Brooklin and Blue Hill. A small area of low topped convection developed along the occlusion during the early evening hours. Winds with this convection snapped and toppled trees at several locations around the town of Haynesville in southeast Aroostook County.
A strong low level jet in advance of a cold front brought damaging south to southeast winds to portions of the central highlands and Downeast areas. The strongest winds occurred during the early morning hours of the 1st. The winds snapped branches and toppled trees which contributed to downed power lines and power outages. At one point nearly 3500 customers were without power...mostly across Hancock county along with southern portions of Penobscot county. A line of low topped convection along the cold front helped mix the strong winds just above the ground to the surface producing isolated convective wind damage at the town of Crystal in Aroostook county.
