Episodes

February 18, 2021

Strong surface high pressure centered from the Midwest into New England helped to supply low level cold air into the area, as a prolonged Classic Cold Air Damming regime was in place throughout the duration of the event. With warmer air present aloft, precipitation fell in the form of freezing rain and sleet across central and south central Virginia, and the Virginia Northern Neck, as a couple of weak low pressure areas tracked northeast along and off the Southeast and Mid Atlantic Coasts. There were two distinct waves of precipitation that moved across the area. One that occurred during the early morning-midday on the 18th, and a second wave of light to moderate precipitation that moved across the region during the early to mid morning on the 19th. This resulted in significant ice accretion between 0.20 inch and 0.40 inch, along with sleet accumulations between 0.5 inch and 1.5 inches. Several trees and power lines were downed, with numerous power outages reported.

February 13, 2021

The combination of Arctic high pressure ridging into the Mid Atlantic region, and weak low pressure areas tracking across the Carolinas and off the Mid Atlantic coast, resulted in significant ice accretion between 0.25 inch and 0.50 inch due to freezing rain across much of central and south central Virginia, and the Virginia northern neck. Numerous trees and power lines were downed, with widespread power outages reported due to the ice accretion.

January 12, 2019

Low pressure tracking from the Tennessee Valley east northeast across the Carolinas and off the Mid Atlantic coast produced snowfall totals between one inch and eight inches across central Virginia, the Virginia Northern Neck, and the Virginia Eastern Shore. In addition, freezing rain and freezing drizzle produced one to two tenths of an inch of ice across portions of central and south central Virginia, resulting in scattered power outages.

October 29, 2012

Intense low pressure moving from off the northern Mid Atlantic Coast northwest into extreme southern New Jersey produced very strong west to northwest winds across eastern Virginia. The very strong winds downed numerous trees, produced minor structural damage, and caused scattered power outages.

January 22, 2005

Freezing rain produced 0.25 to 0.75 of an inch of ice across portions of central and eastern Virginia. The freezing rain on power lines caused power outages, and roadways were very slippery resulting in numerous accidents.

Power out for hours, website down- for hours, unable to report outage online - site down/inactive. Neighbors told power would be back on by 1800 - inaccurate information. Now hearing on local news it will be at least Thursday. Incompetence - will not be renewing contract.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
