Slayton Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

December 12, 2022 - Ice Storm

A prolonged period of freezing drizzle and light freezing rain accumulated to one-third to one-half inch on elevated and road surfaces at Slayton. One accident resulted from a snapped power pole.

-
August 17, 2019 - Tornado

The tornado formed around 2 miles west-southwest of Hadley, moving northeast through a farmstead shortly after touchdown and damaging trees and partially removing a roof from a metal outbuilding. After crossing Minnesota Highway 30, the tornado struck another farm, causing destruction of a barn, and resulting in damage to the house including blowing in a door and driving a 2x4 through the siding. The tornado reached Hadley three minutes after touchdown. Two garages were destroyed in town, along with damage to numerous trees. One final structure was grazed by the tornado just northeast of Hadley, blowing in the door and damaging the roof of a metal outbuilding. The tornado lifted around 2 miles northeast of Hadley after crossing 121st Street and damaging a power transmission pole. The average path width was 75 yards.

April 11, 2019 - Blizzard

Blizzard conditions led to a shutdown of government offices and schools, and travel was not recommended with many roads closed due to the widespread whiteout conditions. Storm-total snowfall from 4 to 10 inches occurred, with 8.0 inches at Lake Wilson and 7.6 inches 4 miles northwest of Currie. With winds gusting at times from 40 to 50 mph, many areas had snow drifts of several feet, making roads impassable. Ice accumulation from one-quarter to one-third of an inch occurred, and helped to produce scattered power outages as snowfall and wind increased. Highway 59 and 30 were both closed on April 11 and early April 12 due to power lines down on the roadway. Damage costs are rough estimates due to utility costs.

-
January 16, 2017 - Winter Weather

Freezing rain and freezing drizzle of less than 0.05 inch caused icy roads, and accumulated lightly on trees, power lines, and other surfaces. Law enforcement agencies reported a few vehicles accidents on the ice, but no known injuries, with traffic being light because of the holiday.

-
December 25, 2016 - High Wind

High winds from a westerly direction followed a low pressure system which had brought Christmas Day rain and thunderstorms. There were several reports of power lines and branches down and resulting power outages, and traffic lights and some signs were damaged. The winds included a peak gust of 66 mph near Dovray.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
