Episodes
Two lines of thunderstorms tracked through southeast Michigan during the early morning hours. Scattered severe thunderstorms were embedded in each line. Damaging winds brought down trees and lead to power outages, especially hard hit was Bay, Oakland, and Livingston counties.
Temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s and dewpoints in the lower 70s set the stage for severe weather ahead of a cold front. Strong to severe thunderstorms moved across southeast Michigan between 4-8 PM EDT, with wind gusts between 40-50 mph and isolated gusts to 60 mph. This resulted in isolated reports of downed trees and powerlines.
A period of freezing rain and sleet had a minimal to moderate impact on central and northern sections of Southeast Michigan. Parts of the Tri-Cities area received over an inch of sleet and up to 2 inches of snow, leading to multiple spin-outs. |Farther south, more freezing rain was observed, where ice accumulated up to 1/2 an inch on vegetative and elevated surfaces along the I-69 corridor. Lesser amounts of ice accumulated along the M-59 corridor. Although roads in these areas remained wet and traffic impacts were minimal, numerous tree branches and power lines were downed due to the weight of the ice, leading to sporadic power outages. No injuries were reported.
An upper level disturbance moved into Lower Michigan and in combination with a humid and unstable airmass over the area, triggered numerous thunderstorms, mainly north of a Brighton to Bad Axe line. Some of the more widespread thunderstorms occurred across Tuscola County where thousands of people were left without power.
