Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Armstrong County
Tornado. Continuation from a tornado that started in Randall County. The supercell underwent another odd handoff from the Palo Duro Canyon tornado near Highway 1258 which was documented by storm chasers in the area. Again, both the initial and new developing tornado co-existed for a period of time creating a wide damage path Near County Road 1 in Armstrong County. This tornado path remained in very rural country with few damage indicators and was likely stronger than suggested by the very limited rating. Along the path the tornado snapped a few small diameter power poles and destroyed a couple out buildings. It also pushed over a semi before it dissipated just north of Highway 287.

Tornado. Multiple reports of downed trees and powerlines due to a tornado along us Highway 207 in far southern Armstrong County.

Tornado. Tornado started 4 ENE of Goodnight at the intersection of County Road J and County Road 30. It overturned a section of center pivot irrigation before doing more significant tree damage at a ranch 7 ENE of Goodnight. Two downed power poles along with uprooted and snapped trees were the most noticeable damage. Some tree debris was deposited 100-200 yards NE of the original location.

The Goodnight Fire began around 1055CST about one mile west of Goodnight Texas in Armstrong county. The wildfire was caused by downed power lines and consumed an estimated sixty acres. There were ten homes and businesses along with two other structures that were threatened by the wildfire but were saved and there were no homes or other structures that were damaged or destroyed. However, there were two vehicles destroyed by the wildfire. There were no reports of injuries or fatalities however there were three near misses reported. The wildfire crossed the railroad tracks at Farm to Market Road 294 and the fire was heading directly toward the town of Goodnight Texas. The wildfire did cause US Highway 287 to be closed down. Mutual aid was not readily available due to multiple other larger fires in the area. It was reported that one tractor trailer and one car were destroyed by the wildfire. A total of three fire departments and other fire agencies responded to the wildfire which was contained around 1500CST.

Tornado. The tornado touched down three miles south of Goodnight in Armstrong County at 1620 CST and then lifted at 1643 CST eight miles northeast of Goodnight. The tornado was on the ground for approximately eleven miles with a maximum path width of one hundred yards. Two power poles were reported broken just southwest of Goodnight along with considerable damage to barbed wire fencing.
