The Gogebic County Sheriff reported trees and power lines down in Wakefield.
The NWS storm survey concluded that damage in and immediately surrounding Wakefield was caused by straight-line thunderstorm winds up to 90 mph. Wind damage included an overturned camper trailer, a roof ripped off an old skating rink, a few damaged or destroyed outbuildings, hundreds of large uprooted or snapped trees (some 30 to 40 inches in diameter), downed power lines, and several trees downed on houses or vehicles. The survey team could not access all areas around Wakefield due to the number of downed trees. The time of the report was based on radar, observations and interviews of individuals in the area.

The preliminary storm report by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield shows a tornado likely occurred at 7:47 p.m. northwest of Irwin. Survey shows widespread, uprooted and snapped trees on Rock Castle and Old Stage Roads. Sixteen homes were damages with widespread power outages. NWS estimates a width of 100 yards with a wind speed of 90 miles per hour.

Severe weather is predicted in the area Wednesday night as well, so Gogebic County Emergency Management is reminding residents to be prepared.

As of 7:15 a.m. central time, Xcel Energy’s outage map says there are about 8,000 customers without power. It is expected to be restored around 8:30 a.m.
