Power Outage in Americus, GA

The Sumter County 911 center reported trees and power lines blown down around Americus including along Forrest Street, Norris Street, Ohara Road and Patton Drive.

Sumter County EMA reported trees and powerlines down near the intersection of Harrold Ave and West Furlow Street.

The Sumter County Emergency Manager reported hundreds of trees and power lines blown down across the county. A wind gust of 53 mph was measured near New Era. Radar estimated between 2 and 3 inches of rain fell across the county with 2.95 inches measured near Croxton Crossroads. No injuries were reported.

The Sumter County 911 Center reported that two trees were down on power lines in the north part of the county, north of Americus near the Schley county border. U.S. Highway 27 was temporarily blocked from a downed tree.

The Sumter County Emergency Management Director confirmed that an EF1 tornado touched down and tracked a little over two miles across the southern part of the county. The tornado touched down approximately five miles south of Americus near U.S. Highway 19. A grocery store on U.S. Highway 19, just south of McLittle Bridge Road, suffered a collapsed wall and roof damage. A large tree also fell on a forestry building near the location. A nearby home also suffered minor damage. The tornado continued to a point approximately 5.5 miles southeast of Americus or near Georgia Highway 377. Approximately 50 to 100 trees were uprooted along the path of the tornado. Some power lines were also down along the path of the tornado.

The Sumter County 911 Center reported that a few power lines were blown down in the Americus area as a line of thunderstorms moved through.

A damage survey conducted by the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Peachtree City, Georgia confirmed that yet a third EF1 tornado touched down in Sumter county. This was a long-lived tornado and tracked across three counties, Sumter, Crisp, and Wilcox, for an approximate path length of 33 miles. This tornado touched down in far southeast Sumter county in the Cobb community and crossed Lake Blackshear into Crisp county about three miles east-southeast of Cobb. The tornado was determined to have a maximum path width of 200 yards with maximum winds estimated at 100 mph. Within Sumter county, one home was destroyed and 45 suffered minor to moderate damage. The damage was largely the result of downed trees on the structures. Two to three dozen trees and several power lines were down along the path of the tornado.

In addition to many trees and power lines down in the area, considerable damage was noted to several buildings and property in the general area. A Goodwill drop off box was turned over as well as several truck bed covers which were blown over and about. To the southeast of Americus, several trees and power lines were down along Brady Road. Part of the roof was blown of the Textron building and a wall of the same building collapsed. Another building at Caravel Boats also sustained roof damage. The liners of three trucks at a nearby Ford Dealership were blown near 1500 feet to the east and landed on Sherwood Road. The emergency manager indicated that the wind was caused by strong straight line winds and not a tornado.

The Sumter County Emergency Management Director reported that numerous trees and power lines were blown down from near Plains to five miles east of Friendship in the western part of the county.

The Americus Times Recorder reported that numerous trees and power lines were down in the eastern part of the county across DeSoto Seed Farm Road, Foster Ball Road, and at the intersection of Georgia Highways 27 and 195.

The Sumter County Emergency Management Director reported that five to six trees were down on power lines in the Americus area. Two more trees were reported down by the county 911 Center on U.S. Highway 19 near the Schley county line.

A damage survey conducted by the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia concluded that the EF3 tornado that first touched down in southeast Webster county continued to track northeast from the southwest to the northeast corner of Sumter county and then continued into extreme southern Macon county before finally lifting. The tornado tracked a total distance on the ground of approximately 40 miles. The tornado entered Sumter county about 4.75 miles southwest of Plains in southwest Sumter county and exited the northeast part of the county about 9 miles north of Methvins in northeast Sumter county. This was by far the most violent and devastating tornado of the March 1st outbreak. The tornado tracked roughly 32 miles across Sumter county with a maximum path width of 1.0 mile wide, which occurred in the Americus area. Damage within the city of Americus was extensive, although structures, trees, and power lines were down along the entire path of the tornado. The most significant damage in Americus was to the Sumter Regional Hospital, of which a significant portion was destroyed. Hundreds of homes and businesses in the Americus area were either totally destroyed or sustained significant damage. Hunderds of vehicles were also damaged or destroyed by debris and/or tossed about like matchsticks. The majority of the damage was within the vicinity of the Sumter Regional Hospital. Two deaths were reported at a home in Americus when a wall collapsed on a 43 year-old male and a 53-year old female. At least eight injuries were documented, but there may have been more.||Within the city of Americus, proper, there were 1235 total structures damaged or destroyed, including 217 businesses, 993 residences, 3 cemeteries, 10 churches, 1 fire station, 1 hospital, 8 recreational facilities/parks, and 2 schools. There were 75 structures (42 businesses, 31 residences, 1 hospital, 1 church) were destroyed. There were 148 structures (27 businesses, 116 residences, 3 recreational facilities/parks, 2 churches) with major damage. There were 331 structures (60 businesses, 260 residences, 3 recreational facilities/parks, 5 churches, 1 school, 2 cemeteries) with moderate damage and 681 structures (88 businesses, 586 residences, 2 recreational facilities/parks, 2 churches, 1 school, 1 cemetery, 1 fire station) with minor damage.

The Sumter County 911 Center and Sheriff's Office reported that thunderstorm winds had blown down many trees across the county. A number of trees were also down on power lines across the county. The Sumter Electric Cooperative Membership reported that 1800 residents, 300 of which were in Americus, were left without power during the height of the storm.

The Americus Times Recorder reported that strong winds, associated with an area of showers and thunderstorms, caused considerable damage around the county. Several large pine trees were blown down, several causing damage to homes. Another tree fell on a vehicle while being driven down Packinghouse Road. Another road was blocked by a large fallen pine tree, which caused workers in an emergency vehicle to go into the ditch when they attempted to go around it. A number of trees and power lines were down in the eastern portion of the county. Approximately 200-300 people were left without power during the evening hours.

The Sumter Electric Membership Cooperative reported that one tree and one power line had been blown down.

The Americus Times-Recorder and the county 911 center reported that thunderstorm winds blew down trees and power lines in the city. In addition, a small private airplane was flipped over by winds at Souther Field. Trees were also blown down in Plains. The Sumter county Emergency Manager also reported that a barn was blown down.

A National Weather Service disaster survey team reported that an F2 tornado first touched down at 9:30 pm EST 6 miles southeast of Americus, Georgia, on Henry Hart Road, midway between Georgia Highway 377 and U. S. Highway 280. The tornado then moved northeast at approximately 45 mph lifting 1 mile east of the Flint river at Georgia Highway 27 and Joe Stewart Road around 9:42 pm EST. The tornado cut a path up to 100 yards wide and traveled on the ground about 10 miles or 12 minutes. Although the tornado traveled through mainly rural areas, significant damage was reported. A wooden frame house was completely destroyed near the tornado's touchdown point on Henry Hart Road, while another home was damaged nearby. As the tornado continued along its northeastward path, five outbuildings were destroyed, three barns were destroyed, two cattle were killed, one large camper was overturned, one high tension power line tower was severely damaged, and a few temporary construction trailers were damaged. Finally, just before the tornado lifted, several chicken houses were destroyed on Joe Stewart Road. As a result, nearly 400 chickens were killed. In addition, numerous trees and power lines were blown down all across the county. There were no injuries or deaths reported with the tornado.

Strong winds on the back side of a dissipating area of rain and thunderstorms combined with rain soaked ground to blow down a number of trees and trees down on power lines across the region. Numerous power outages were reported and some roads were blocked by downed trees.
