Power Outage in Bardstown, KY

Scattered tree and power line damage was observed across the county. At one point, 12% of customers in Nelson County were without power.

Snowfall of 1 to 3 inches accumulated with blowing snow and strong wind gusts of 30-40 mph. Rapidly falling temperatures resulted in slick roads and significant travel impacts. Treacherous travel conditions were noted throughout December 23rd, a busy holiday travel day. Wind chills of -25 to -30 were observed on the morning of the 23rd. Extreme cold strained the power grid and rolling blackouts were implemented by utility companies.

Ice accumulation of 0.25 to 0.50 inches occurred across Nelson County. The ice knocked numerous trees down, resulting in about 2,000 customers without power in Bardstown.

A storm not associated with the bow echo that crossed Louisville brought isolated large hail and damaging winds to Bardstown. Local Emergency Management reported several trees and power lines downed across Bardstown. An off duty NWS employee reported one inch hail and 60 mph winds. Strong winds damaged a hanger's door and tore some trim from the Old Terminal Building at the Nelson County Airport.

Thunderstorms produced damaging winds and large hail over much of East Central and North Central Kentucky. Numerous trees and power lines were downed over much of the area. The Versailles area was particularly hard hit. A tree was blown on to a car 5 miles southwest of Versailles, and people were trapped inside for a time. Many large trees were downed at the Woodford Hills Country Club golf course, 3 miles south of Versailles.
