Power Outage in Beaumont, TX

Power poles were snapped in Beauxart Gardens. Southeast Texas Regional Airport also recorded a wind gust of 55 mph.

Mandatory evacuation. Storm surge flooded Sabine Pass and backed up area waterways including the Neches River, Hillebrandt Bayou, and Taylor Bayou. Numerous trees and power lines blown down across Port Arthur, Port Neches, Beaumont, Nederland, and Groves. Homes and businesses were damaged by the fallen trees, lines, and poles. Over 60 percent of the county was without power during the peak of the storm. Five people died (indirect deaths) from carbon monoxide poisoning including three in Port Arthur from a generator running in an enclosed area. Another 18 persons were injured and treated for carbon monoxide poisoning (indirect injuries). Wind gusts ranged from 55 to 90 mph across the county. Storm surge reached 3.97 MHHW at Texas Point near Sabine Pass.

Tree branches around 3 inches thick and power poles were broken in Nederland.

The KFDM-TV mesonet measured wind gusts of 45 mph or higher at many stations between 1200 PM CST and 100 PM CST, with a peak wind gust of 53 mph at Lamar University in Beaumont. A TCEQ monitoring station in Port Arthur measured a peak wind gust of 52 mph. The KBPT ASOS measured a peak wind gust of 49 mph at 1218 PM CST. Entergy stated up to 4000 customers lost power across Jefferson County, and the public reported siding damage to homes on College Street in Beaumont.

Entergy reported over 1000 customers without power across Jefferson County, particularly in the Labelle and Hillebrandt communities.

KFDM-TV reported trees blown down on Helbig Road, with more than 4400 customers losing power in Jefferson County.

KFDM-TV and the Beaumont Enterprise reported widespread damaged plumbing across Jefferson County due to the record cold temperatures. 10 petrochemical plants and refineries across the county experienced excessive emissions due to cracked pipes, instrument failures, and equipment malfunctions. Entergy reported sporadic power outages through the county. Centerpoint Entergy used trucks to pump natural gas directly into a northwest Beaumont neighborhood of 100 homes after natural gas lines failed due to the cold weather.

Beaumont Enterprise reported numerous downed powerlines across Beaumont, with 5700 customers without power across the city and 11000 customers without power throughout southeast Texas.

Hurricane Ike caused category 1 wind damage across Jefferson County. Many trees and power lines were downed, some landing on homes and businesses.

Hurricane Humberto made landfall around 1 am in rural southwestern Jefferson County, in McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. The minimum pressure was estimated to be around 985 mb. While maximum winds were estimated to be 80 knots or 90 mph, hurricane-force winds were confined to a 15 mile wide area. Cities that saw the highest winds of 60 to 80 mph include Port Arthur, Sabine Pass, and Nederland. Damage was primarily trees blown down, roof damage, and power lines downed. At least 12 injuries were reported, due to snake bites, cuts and bruises, and a few broken bones. Power outages occurred to over 100,000 customers. Most urban locations had power back up within a few days, but some rural locations saw power out for up to a week. Maximum storm tides were 4.87 ft MLLW at Texas Point and 4.07 ft MLLW at Sabine Pass North. This resulted in minor beach erosion.

Jefferson County Sheriff Office reported a power pole blown down east of China.

A severe thunderstorm moved through Jefferson and Orange Counties producing tree and power line damage, however most occurred at Lamar University in Beaumont were multiple building were damaged.

Colder air plunged to the gulf coast while an upper level disturbance provided support for precipitation. Precipitation began to change to snow across the region during the evening of the 7th and accumulate. Snow lingered through much of the morning of the 8th. The heavy wet snow caused some power outages in the area and area schools to close.

Funnel clouds were reported near Beaumont and Port Arthur and lightning knocks out power to parts of Orange.

A strengthening upper level low over western Texas began to push east-northeast across southeast Texas from the morning of February 3 into February 4. At the surface, temperatures were generally above freezing, but dewpoints were well below freezing. This allowed for a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow to develop across southeast Texas during the morning hours of February 3rd, with a changeover to all freezing rain by the afternoon. Freezing rain then continued into the morning of February 4th before ending. ||Portions of coastal southeast Texas, including the Beaumont/Port Arthur area, received around one tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. Further to the north, most of the Lakes Region of southeast Texas saw at least a trace of freezing rain. The resulting ice accumulation throughout the region caused numerous car accidents (with 1 fatality), many road closures, and some power outages.

A powerful low pressure system moved across the northwest Gulf of Mexico during the morning and early afternoon hours on January 9, producing numerous showers and thunderstorms across southeast Texas. After the precipitation moved east of the region, a wake low event caused strong east to southeast winds with measured wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph at many locations. Scattered reports of damage were received in Jefferson, Orange, and southern Hardin counties.

A powerful and deep upper level trough of low pressure moved quickly across Texas and Louisiana on Friday, December 4, 2009. At the same time, a strong area of surface low pressure developed in the western Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, a cold Arctic airmass filtered southward through the southern United States. All of these factors combined to produce a large area of rain along the Texas coast during the morning hours, which then spread northeastward across southeast Texas during the late morning and afternoon hours. As temperatures gradually cooled, the rain began to mix with and eventually change over to snow from west to east across the area. Snow fell for many hours across much of southeast Texas. ||Total snow accumulations across southeast Texas ranged from just a dusting up to 3 inches, with the heaviest amounts in one mesoscale band that stretched from Houston to Kountze to Kirbyville to Newton. Some snowfall totals included 2.5 about 5 miles north of Silsbee, 2 in Kountze, 1.2 in Wildwood, 1 in Lumberton, 0.5 in downtown Beaumont, a trace at the Southeast Texas Regional Airport, and a trace at Jasper.||Although this did not set an official record due to no measurable snowfall at the Southeast Texas Regional Airport, this was unofficially the earliest snowfall on record in southeast Texas.

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms developed during the afternoon hours across interior southeast Texas, before moving southward into the Gulf of Mexico. Numerous reports of large hail, damaging winds, and intense lightning were received, with one fatality from a falling tree limb. High winds and lightning combined to knock out power to 11000 customers across southeast Texas.

Tropical Storm Edouard produced minor wind damage and some coastal flooding along the southeast Texas coast before it made landfall around 7 am CDT near McFaddin Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson County, TX.||The lowest pressure reading in southeast Texas occurred at Sea Rim State Park, where the barometer dropped to 996.6 mb. The strongest wind gusts were mainly 50 to 70 mph across Jefferson and Orange counties, including 49 kt (56 mph) at Southeast Texas Regional Airport ASOS and 62 kt (71 mph) at Texas Point TCOON gage. Rainfall totals were between 1 and 3 inches. The highest storm tides were between 2 and 5 ft MLLW, including 3.75 ft at Sabine Pass North and 4.66 ft at Texas Point.||In Jefferson County, widespread power outages were reported, with up to 300,000 customers losing electricity. Trees and power lines were blown down county-wide. Hundreds of homes received minor roof damage. Highway 87 was briefly closed betwen Port Arthur and Sabine Pass due to storm surge flooding.||In Orange County, a few trees and power lines were blown down. Up to 700 customers lost power. Minor roof damage occurred to some homes and businesses.

Hurricane Humberto made landfall as a strong category one hurricane in rural southwestern Jefferson County early in the morning on September 13th, over McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge. Storm total rainfall ranged from one inch in southern Jasper and Newton Counties, to almost 11 inches near McFaddin Wildlife Refuge. Some flash flooding occurred in the urban areas between beaumont and Orange. Highest estimated winds were around 80 knots or 90 mph, but hurricane-force wind only extended 15 miles. Damage was primarily trees blown down, roof damage, and power lines downed. The lowest pressure reading was estimated to be 985 mb at landfall. Coastal storm tides were 3 to 5 feet, with the highest occurring at Texas Point. One fatality was attributed to the hurricane. An 80 year old man in Bridge City (Orange County, TX) ventured outside to check his property and was killed instantly when his carport collapsed on him.

A tree was blown down on Craigen Road. Numerous power lines were also downed.

Water entered as many as 30 homes in the the Fannett area, where as much as 17 inches of rain had fallen. A 13 year old boy in Beaumont drowned after he was electrocuted in his back yard by a downed power line and fell in standing water.

Numerous trees and power lines were down throughout the city. Over 11,000 customers lost power.

A utility company reported trees were blown down on power lines along Highway 69.

High winds associated with a severe thunderstorm blew down numerous trees and power lines. The most significant damage was to the Groves Middle School, where the gymnasium lost part of its roof and one wall.

Trees and power lines were downed across the city during a severe thunderstorm.

High winds estimated between 40 and 60 mph blew down many trees and power lines across southeast Texas. Trees were knocked onto homes and vehicles in Beaumont, Port Arthur and Nederland in Jefferson County. In Mauriceville in Orange County, high winds toppled trees onto the train tracks. The high winds were a result of a strong high pressure system over the area.

One man was injured when his mobile home flipped over as a tornado passed nearby. Three other people in the home were uninjured. The home rolled at least 25 yards into the woods behind the home. This mobile home was tied down, but the tie downs either snapped or were pulled out of the ground. Debris from this home was scattered over a mile east on Highway 73. A total of two mobile homes were destroyed and another one was severely damaged. Many trees and power lines were downed along Highway 73.

The Groves Middle School received the brunt of the second tornado to hit Jefferson County this morning. The roof of the gymnasium was torn off, water damaged the interior, and a brick wall was blown down. Three classrooms were damaged from broken glass. Over a dozen neighboring homes in the 5000 block of Cleveland Avenue received damage. Two of these were severe, when trees fell on the homes. Many trees and power lines were blown down.
