Belcourt Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

April 23, 2022 - Blizzard

Strong winds and heavy snow combined to produce a blizzard. In addition, periods of freezing rain occurred which accreted on power lines. This, combined with strong winds, led to extensive damage to power lines, cross arms, and poles, and thus widespread power outages.

April 16, 2016 - Ice Storm

Rain changed to freezing rain over northern Rolette County in the early evening and continued through mid to late evening. The greatest damage occurred to commercial electrical service, though multiple trees were also damage. Area rural electrical cooperatives reported that approximately 1300 meters lost power. Four poles were broken along with wire breaks. The outages were caused by trees either leaning on or breaking power lines. The majority of the outages were east of North Dakota Highway 3. Power was restored to almost all customers by the evening of April 17.

November 6, 2008 - Heavy Snow

Around twelve inches of total snowfall was reported by Friday morning across Rolette County. The public reported 12 inches of snow in Saint John. Newspaper reports indicated widespread power outages across Rolette County Thursday morning into Friday due to the combination of rain, freezing rain, and heavy snow. Schools and businesses were forced to close Thursday.
