Power Outage in Corning, NY

Strong thunderstorm winds knocked down a tree onto power lines.

Thunderstorm winds knocked down trees and power lines which blocked the roadway at Route 12 near Griffin Road.

Snowfall accumulated up to 18 inches mainly over the higher terrain. The snow was heavy and wet and cause scattered power outages as many trees were knocked down.

High winds from Hurricane Sandy affected the county beginning in the early evening of Tuesday the 29th and last into the overnight hours of Tuesday the 30th. Peak sustained winds at the Elmira-Corning airport were 40 mph with a peak wind gust measured at 63 mph. There was severe damage at a marina at the head of the Lake on Keuka. The winds also knocked down trees and power lines across parts of the county. A total of 5000 customers were without power during the height of the storm. Most of the outages were in the eastern part of the county. Power was restored within a day for most residents.

High winds occurred across the region with gusts between 50 and 60 mph. Numerous trees were blown down and many customers were without power.

A NWS storm survey concluded that a tornado touched down near Paynesville in |Allegany county (See Storm Data for New York Western) and moved into southwest Steuben county about 2.5 miles west of Willeyville. The tornado moved east approximately 2.7 miles, where it lifted just east of Willeysville. There was significant tree damage in Steuben County along Cramer Road, County Route 124, and Squab Hollow Road with an average path length of about 100 yards. A power pole was knocked down in this area with a nearby small structure destroyed. A car also sustained damage from a falling tree. Minor structural damage was sustained at a home. There was additional minor tree damage on Day Road near where the tornado dissipated.

Ice accumulations ranged from 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, with the higher terrain areas hardest hit. 11,400 customers were without power.

Over one-half inch of ice accumulated on trees, roads and other surfaces. Many tree branches were broken off with scattered power outages reported.

Large branches and power lines were downed in the city of Corning.
