Low pressure tracked northeast through the Ohio Valley into the Great Lakes region. As it did, strong winds knocked down trees and power lines which caused numerous road closures and power outages.
The remnants of hurricane Ike raced northeast through the midwest and merged with a frontal boundary across the lower Ohio Valley Sunday morning. Abundant sunshine promoted deep mixing of the atmosphere, and warm, dry air aloft translated down to the surface. Gusty winds in excess of 70 mph persisted for a period of several hours, causing significant damage. Over 700,000 power outages occurred for Duke energy customers in the Cincinnati area, some taking over a week to be restored.
High winds in excess of 60 mph blew down numerous trees, power lines, utility poles, and various signs. Several thousand power outages were noted due to the widespread nature of the winds and the resulting damage.
A weak low pressure system moved across the Ohio Valley causing several hours of freezing rain before temperatures warmed above freezing. Ice accumulations above one-quarter inch were common across the region. A few tree limbs and power lines were knocked down from the weight of the ice.
