Power Outage in Hamilton, GA

A National Weather Service survey consisting of an analysis of measured wind data, along with reports from Emergency Managers and various other local, state and federal officials, found that tropical storm conditions occurred in the county. There were numerous reports of trees and power lines blown down. Wind speeds were estimated between 35 and 45 mph.

The media reported numerous trees and power lines blown down across the county. The 23 mile Pine Mountain Trail in Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park was closed due to dozens of fallen trees and many hanging limbs. Thousands of customers were without electricity for varying periods of time. Radar estimated 2 to 4 inches of rain fell across the county with 3.69 inches measured near Calloway Gardens. No injuries were reported.

A National Weather Service survey team determined that an EF-1 tornado with maximum wind speeds of 95 MPH and a maximum path width of 250 yards travelled for just under 2.5 miles along U.S Highway 27 in southern Harris County between the communities of Fortson and Cataula. The tornado began on West Bonacre Road just west of Highway 27, where a few small trees were snapped, and moved northeast, intensifying as it crossed Highway 27 north of Raymond Road where numerous trees were snapped or uprooted and several power lines and poles were brought down. The most significant damage was observed just northeast of this location along Gatlin Road where an estimated 50-100 large trees were snapped or uprooted. One large tree fell on a home at this location causing significant damage, however no injuries were reported. Continuing northeast, additional damage was observed between Knowles Road and Wells Drive where a grove of trees was snapped or uprooted on the east side of Highway 27. The Harris County 911 center reported trees blown down, including one on a power line, on South L Street and in the vicinity of the intersection of Trammell Mill Road and Hines Gap Road northeast of Pine Mountain Valley.

Broadcast media reported that a tree fell on Highway 315 in Ellerslie. A power line was blown down as well.

A damage survey conducted by the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Peachtree City confirmed that a brief EF0 tornado touched down approximately five miles southeast of Hamilton and tracked east-northeast just 0.43 mile before lifting. The maximum path width was 50 yards with maximum wind speeds of 75 mph. Ten trees along the path of the tornado were topped. In addition, a gazebo and storage shed were destroyed by the tornado. While there was widespread damage to trees and power lines across much of the county, other than the damage noted along this brief path, all of the other damage was the result of strong thunderstorm wind gusts and not a tornado.||[04/15-04/16/11: Tornado #1, County #1-1, EF0, Harris, 2011:007].

The maximum snowfall reported was 4.0 inches. Snowfall ranged from three inches in the north part of the county to four inches in the south part. Some trees and power lines were brought down by the weight of the heavy wet snow.

The Harris County Emergency Management Director reported that high winds knocked down several trees and power lines throughout the county. The high winds were associated with a line of heavy rain showers moving through the area from southwest to northeast and a strong low-level jet traversing the region ahead of a deep upper-level trough.

Several other trees were blown down near U.S. Highway 27 in the far southeast part of the county between Ellerslie and the Muscogee county line. Two dead trees were blown down on Georgia Highway 85 at Ellerslie. A couple of power lines were also down near Ellerslie.
