An upper level disturbance was located to the south of the region across the mid-Atlantic States. Although winds aloft were rather light, the combination of the nearby upper level storm and a small amount of instability that developed during the afternoon sparked a few isolated thunderstorms. One of these thunderstorms produced frequent cloud to ground lightning, which caused damage to a few trees and power lines at the Saratoga National Battlefield in Stillwater. The battlefield lost power as a result of the downed wires. In addition, the thunderstorm produced a wind gust strong enough to knock over one tree in Easton. Thunderstorm activity quickly diminished later in the evening after sunset.

June 29, 2003

A weak upper level disturbance spawned isolated showers and thunderstorms across eastern New York on the afternoon of June 29. One of the storms briefly pulsed up and became severe as it moved across South Argyle in Washington County, producing a microburst as well as an unusually large number of cloud to ground lightning strikes. Thunderstorm winds, estimated between 70 and 90 mph by a NWS Survey, produced three distinct clusters of damage, less than a mile from each other. The first cluster of damage occurred on Harper Road, just west of Lick Spring Road., where numerous tree limbs broke off and a one story house cathedral roof was partially ripped off and buckled. In a second area, a 15-inch diameter pine tree was uprooted, and the tops off many smaller ones were snapped off. One final area on McNeil Road saw more tree damage, including a 200-year old maple tree. During the storm, an Argyle man was reported to have been struck by lightning while working in his garage. He was transported to the Glens Falls Hospital and later released. The storms caused spotty power outages as well.

March 3, 2002

A line of showers, right ahead of a powerful cold front, produced destructively strong non-convective wind gusts across Saratoga and Washington Counties, late on the afternoon of Sunday, March 3rd. In Saratoga County, wind gusts blew a roof off a house in the town of Greenfield. A tree blew through a house in Halfmoon and numerous trees and wires were blown down in Corinth. In Washington County, trees and wires were blown down in the town of Cambridge.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
