Power Outage in Hyden, KY

The 911 Dispatch reported several instances of wind damage across the county that led to secondary impacts. ||These reports include:|At 7:10 PM EST - In the Hollins Fork community, a tree fell onto a powerline causing the transformer to blow. This in turn caught fire and ignited a brushfire on the surrounding terrain.|At 7:15 PM EST - A tree was blown down onto the roadway and a car ran into it.|At 7:30 PM EST - A tree fell onto a porch of a residence in the community of Mozelle.

Powerlines were down near the Dollar General on Cutshin Rd in Wooton, KY. Numerous power outages were also reported as a result.

Up to half an inch of ice accumulation due to freezing rain occurred in the higher elevations around Leslie county, with much less ice in the valleys. The weight of the ice brought down tree limbs, entire trees, and power lines around the county. The downed trees, limbs, and power lines blocked many roads.

A tree was blown down in front of Davidsons Garage on US 421. Several transformers were also blown near Hosea, including on Owls Nest Road at the ambulance service in Hyden. Part of the area was without power.

Snowfall amounts ranged from five up to seven and a half inches across the county. At the end of the event, around 1400 residents were without power in the county.

Five inches of new snow was reported in Smilax. Trees, power lines, and area roads were ice and snow covered.

Power lines were blown down on Camp Creek Rd. A few trees were blown down elsewhere in the county.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down in the Hyden area. There were sporadic power outages also occurring in northern Leslie county.

A spotter reported one tenth of an inch of new ice accumulation in Smilax. The ice was accumulating on walkways, roadways, power lines and trees in the area.

At least 7 inches of snow had fallen since 10 pm Friday night. Power has been out since 830 pm on December 18th.

The 911 dispatch center reported that trees and power lines were down across the county.

Five and three quarters of an inch of snow had fallen since 3 pm on the 18th. Numerous trees and power lines were still down around the county. Many secondary roads were still impassable due to the heavy wet snow and downed trees and power lines. Power was out across the county with most residents without power as of report issuance.

Thunderstorm wind gusts downed numerous power lines around the county; leaving around 3500 people without power.

An EF-1 tornado with wind speeds of around 95 mph briefly touched down one mile southeast of Wooton. Large trees were either snapped off or blown over. One tree fell onto a power line.

One tree was blown down in Hyden. Multiple trees and power lines were blown down elsewhere throughout the county by wind gusts estimated at 67 mph.

Several trees were blown down and took down the power transformer serving customers in Cutshin Holler.

The first full day of Spring brought heavy snow to extreme southeastern Kentucky which began around 1 am on Wednesday, March 21. Kingdom Come State Park in Harlan County received 17 inches by 8:15 am, with Big Laurel in Leslie County receiving 16 inches by 9 am. The largest total recorded in Perry County was in Leatherwood with 13 inches on the ground by 8:45 am and Skyline and Whitesburg in Letcher County reporting 4 inches on the ground by 1 pm. 3,500 people were without power in Whitesburg and several people were stranded on Pine Mountain. Snow amounts of 4 inches or more were generally reported above 2000 feet in elevation.
